Hi everyone, my husbands birthday is coming up and he's mentioned recently that he wants some big pit reels. He's currently on very old shimano ones.
He's mentioned both the Ultegra 14000's and the Fox 12000 xc in the past but both are slightly over budget.
I've been researching and have narrowed it down to Fox X13, Shimano Speedmaster 14000 XTC or Fox Eos 12000. All roughly the same price.
I want to stick to either Fox or Shimano as these are the brands he likes.
Which do you think I should go with?
Just so you know his fishing style, we mainly fish medium-large sized lakes and usually catch carp up to 35lb. We don't go to France or anything like that and a 40lb er is near impossible due to where we fish.
p.s I've read that the speedmaster is classed as a "surf reel"... does this matter?

The Speedmasters are excellent reels been using them for over a year no issues with them at all and the clutch is very smooth.

There are better reels available in that price range from other makers, but if you insist it must be those then the shimanos all day long

Shimanos every time, my lad had some Fox EOS 10000 reels and they weren't the best. That said, a few people on here rate the Fox FX9's and FX11's.

IMHO you should either buy him one of the exact models he's mentioned, or none at all.
Tackle is all about personal choice and he hasn't chosen the Speedmasters or that Fox offering.

All the fox reels are tat from my experience. Not sure about new ones though maybe that's changed. Shimano will be better build quality that's for sure. Even the penn, okuma and latest pro logic offerings would he above fox for me.
