Hi, does anyone have any feedback about using one of these. I intend to attach it to a 12v battery to charge an iPad. They come in various power outputs and wondered what size inverter would be best.

Going from DC to AC then back to DC again can't be very efficient.
Any particular reason to do it that way?

I would've thought a simple 12v to 5V converter is all that is needed?

Yeah something like this .... Then plug a usb cigarette adaptor in it

Go with post 4, an inverter is overthinking it unless you have a specific need for 240v.

I use one with a tracer golf cart battery if I need to take my laptop, it's a great big HP workstation type thing and a normal size power pack won't work.
I chuck the stuff in a rectangular bucket and it's good to go. Wouldn't want to be lugging it round the lake so only use it once in a while if I'm desperate to go fishing but need to do a few hours work while I'm there.
Think the inverter was about £40, will power my laptop all day just about.

Hi, one thing, if you get croc clips to cig lighter socket etc.
Make sure it as decent/ thickish wires on it. Or put some thicker ones on yourself.
Thin wires you get on some/ lots, ebay etc, don't half reduce current output (too much electrical resistance), prob some volt drop as well.

Thanks for replies. I was told not to connect my phone or iPad to a dc power output as it can ruin the battery in the device, hence the use of an inverter to convert the dc output of the battery to ac. I also need a three pin socket to re charge my camera batteries so cannot use the crocodile clip arrangement set up directly onto the battery.

Apple themselves sell a charger that runs off 12V. I'm sure other makes are just as good but if you are really worried it's available
HERE
What type of camera batteries do you use?

I use a heavy duty 12v car battery and an inverter I bought from Matalan years ago
It works a treat for charging my laptops/tablets etc.. (For work) and works very well for a few days on the bank if I need it.
I have tried other power packs / lead acid batteries etc.. but I haven't found anything better.
Disadvantage is its heavy.
