I've been thinking about and also heard a few people mention baits of the past which were game changers. I think generally the original grange was considered one of these but I used to use Active-8 in the 90's and that changed my fishing. I went from catching the odd carp here and there to having results which were unbelievable. What do you think the reason is there seem to be no such baits that exist like this anymore?

Ingredients are more expensive yet prices have not really gone up in comparison.

I was thinking perhaps the quality of baits overall has improved perhaps, but what was so special about those two baits particularly?

Do you ever think a boilie will be a game changer ever again?

Most probably all tastes and flavours have been done to death by now

Carp are sniffing Krill baits and going "f*ck that, Had Fish last 3 nights .... I fancy something sweet but don't want Nuts again"
every flavour has been done to death

I do. But it will have to be radically different to what we get now. 99% of baits seem to follow the same formula. These baits probabky already exist but are too difficult to roll by machine.

The guy that invented the grange and gave it to mainline fishes one of my tickets. Wanna know what's in it? Lol

I'm joking by the way he'd never tell me.

I think some of those game changer baits were so successful due to them being so different at the time. Richworth Tuttis. How many fish got caught on them? But then we had the fishmeal craze and the likes of tuttis got pushed out.

As much as I hate to add it to the list, I think Cell was a bit of a game changer. In an era when there was so much good quality baits around, for a few years it became the superstar take anywhere bait. Every man and his dog seemed to be on it.

I guess now that other things have come more to the forefront, like the use of hydros in bait. God years ago I thought I was the most cutting edge angler out there cos I dipped my hookbaits in a nash whiskey glug and all my mates were using them straight out the bag. Lol.

I think some baits changed anglers perceptions on 'how to fish', and more realised the benefits of a decent food source as much as the carp did.

Fishmeal baits, Premier, Nutrabaits Big Fish Mix and Trigga, then along came Mainline with Grange CSL etc.
Anglers started baiting and fishing, and baits improved because of it.
The Cell, a birdfood, milk protein and a complete protein source in a form of yeast.

Then ingredients rose in price, the 'nutritional' attractors, the protein sources, White Fishmeal, milk proteins, so bait quality has dropped, and there is a rise in fishing over groundbait, spod mixes etc.
Just as an example, from Bill Cottam, Hi-Nu-Val cost close on £10 a kilo on release. That same bait base mix is £23.50.

Until we come up with new useable nutritional sources of proteins, that is proteins providing all essential amino acids, I don't think we will have anything as dominant.
I think that there are Anglers keeping quieter about good baits, the baiting, feeding and fishing, is not the favourite because of the ease and fashion of fishing over spod mix with cheap baits.
The decent bait can be done, yeasty, birdfood, low level of milks and semolina, then a decent liquid food, be it a hydrolysate, that is an easily converted or used by the body.

The difficult part is getting the anglers wanting to spend more than £5 a kilo for boilies.

It wasnt just baits... it was a time when information became readily available to everyone (technical and tactic wise), when waters started with better stocking programs etc... all that combined made a change. Waters are so full of fish now that if tigers wouldnt be banned on so many waters you could just as easily fish with particles and your results would not go down much if at all...

More bait going in more anglers more heavily stocked waters, supply and demand, more superstars,
Are you sure?
