I was given a rod many years ago by the father in law, it's an Edgar Sealey Carpmaster 10' rod. The guides were all knackered but other than that it was OK. I thought I'd have a go at building the rod for use by my youngest who's started to come fishing this year with me and my eldest. I've never built a rod before, the only thing I did many years ago was whip on a replacement guide, so I have a few questions.
The rod is a brown colour (initially thought it was cane but on tinternet it says they are glass). A brass spigot. A full cork handle in surprisingly good nick. A sliding reel seat with 2 reel clamps and tightening nut on a black plastic threaded collar which should slide on the handle, but it's currently stuck at the top. The rod also has some white bands on all the way up the blank, must have been the fashion in the day. I've removed all of the old guides, except for the tip eye which is glued on.
Questions:
1. What's the best way of cleaning the cork handle. Just soap & water and a kitchen scourer?
2. How do I clean the brass spigot?
3. How to I free the stuck sliding reel seat?
4. Best way of sanding down to remove the white bands? Just use fine sandpaper?
5. How do I remove the old tip eye? Just saw it off and lose about 1" off the rod?
6. Once all whippings are done, what epoxy do I use to finish the rod?
Any other tips would be welcome.

1: Yes that will work..for more stubborn staining a fine wet/dry paper used dry will do the job in seconds.
2:Kitchen scourer if pitted..if not use metal polish(tooth paste would do ). It's usually the female ferrule, so nothing new there then , that causes the most grief.
3: Try steaming over a kettle. Don't force it..more than likely a chunk of cork will come off with it !
4:Sandpaper is for the bottom of birdcages and decorating work...what you require are wet/dry abrasive papers.
5:Heat up the tip guide with a lighter or over your gas stove. Don't burn the rod.
6; A rod builder will be along shortly.
