So any electrical bods around?

I'm revamping a mates electric fencing for his lake..

It's remote,so run off a double solar and 12v avon fencing battery..energiser

My question is,we are going to do under the fence gate,what diameter lead out cable is better 1.6mm or 2.5mm,it will.be encased in protective blue water pipe and set fairly deeply, only traffic is a few anglers and a quad and mulcher mower..

Can we get away with 1.6mm ?

I don't know how he's done his gate, but I've always fitted a 6” Steel Angle Iron under gates to stop anything digging underneath, no reason a cable could not run beneath it too, would be fully protected.

Yes that's it Keith,

It's three acre,stream borderd and much evidence of lutra..
We're just making it secure as he liked what ive done

So,we've installed self closing gate latches,sprung closers,on both gates and removed the stretch ,sprung wires that give full circuit to both strands of top and bottom electric fencing wire,coupled with double mesh 25mm,should be OK..

In place of the sprung isolaters,that hook the wires across to the lake,we plan to use lead out insulation fencing cable or underground fencing insulated wire,cable..the idea is ..

You open the gate,get in the lake area,gate shuts behind you,whilst maintaining a constant flow of electricity, previous he got lots of shorts and outage,due to 'others'not hooking the stretch wire across on leaving ,etc..

So by doing this should save headaches,tears and safer all round..

Plus I get a ticket for doing as well...,and my son so good all round


So my question to any bods on here is what diameter of lead out insulated under ground fencing wire encapsulated in a protected sheath would give my friend best flow of electric from the energiser and solar system .1.6mm or 2.5mm..I'm no sparky but the otter fencing is easy...

Ah - as in voltage, just asked a mate who's an eleci for you, 1.6mm will be fine.

Personally I would have fitted 12" Out-riggers at 4ft up, for 75p every 20ft spacing they are far more cost effective and a well proven, totally reliable way of keeping Otters at bay permanently.

So,this system is similar to another I know,..both top and bottom electrictrified, with a combination of short or long isolators on each post,allll the way around the lake,two entrances, and much of the fence is now double meshed,..(some of the original mesh still very good)..

Idea of the underground lead wire ,should stop the gates being the weakest point,but now I've made self closers, and ,yeah feel confident for him,the owner..

If I was him I'd be saying,if you leave the gate open ,you'll loose your place..no excuse for it not to shut now ..its a bit difficult to explain on the forum sometimes, but I know you'll get what I,we have done,doing...I mean two days work and unlimited fishing ..Good result I'd say..

I've spent most of last winter and most of this year helping my very good mate out draining down, removing tons of silt reducing stock levels, primary fencing with skirts and now were just at the point of running the electric fence around the main fence the gates were going to do with slinky's save burying anything but then hes there everyday as its on the estate he works on the only thing were unsure of is how many joules we need I'm reading minimum 1.5 for every mile of wire sounds low to me but in all honesty i'm no electrician.

I'm no sparky either Ian..

But maybe mention to your mate about those slinkys,as sometimes when left hanging down they can create a short which deaden the battery,even if its trickle charged by Solar panels....I have two big solar panels with USB ,charging points..

So last year a goose flew into the top electric wire,which wrapped around the barbed wire,when I turned up,no power..

So now ,in this case we dropped the isolators down the poles and tightend the slack of the wires up..was easy enough..

Tbh ,I get immense pleasure doing fencing..

Will bear that in mind as he direct to the mains and will probably trip the switch on his consumer unit, his lake is literally a hundred yards away from his estate offices he's there everyday Monday to Friday and nearly all of the last twelve months we have both been there at the weekends some evenings, it's been a ball ache at times but rewarding all the same the lake dates back to 1750's the syndicate was started early 1970's by a few old Redmire anglers so be nice to keep it going he's had it the last 20 years and he was at the point where it was go forward and revamp it all or hand the lease back as Mr Otter was visiting most winters of late, it's just a lovely place to be not massive at a couple of acres but it looks like a lake Capability Brown would have designed.

Yes Adam it has that connection I need to check he did tell me sometime ago but my memory is terrible exactly who they were I know it was run/started by Four anglers in 1971/2 and two of them were old Redmire members, I think Len Gurd / Len Arbury had a dabble there at one point, it held a few Redmire commons in the 90's over the thirty pound that were put in there in the 70's as small palm sized fish, as you know it was done by many a Redmire angler back in that era spread far and wide.

And so lead out update..

Been installing this today ,..removed slinkys which have,can caused shorting to full system both top and bottom wires..

Very ,very easy to install,the 1.6mm lead out ,all wires fully encapsulated underground,...you pass through a gate ,gate shuts,...

Anyone who looks after a lake ,or owns one,this is the way forward,unless you have already done this..
