They are meant to be manual bail arm

Thats the idea,it's so you can't knock the handle on the cast causing the bail arm to close and cause a crack off

Shouldn't the bail arm keep spinning when it's open, when you wind the handle
It just shouldn't flip shut
Then you have to close it manually
That's how it works on the Penn reels

You have to close the bail arm before the reel handle can turn a full revolution.

So I can flip the arm open, and get the handle in the position I want without it winding line
It would be a easy way of getting the handles on all my reels in the same position

Don't forget the handle grips all have to be facing the same way,dont worry if you can't manage that as there is a company that make them.I mean who wants to sit there with wonky handles and knobs

It's alright Tony, with this newfound knowledge I've ordered myself 3 spirit level bubbles for my handles just so I can get them precise. I'll be hauling 50s out one after the other now ....

Close the bail arm, loosen the clutch, hold the line just after the line roller to stop the retreive and turn the reel handle until it is aligned. You won't generate any line twist because the spool is not actually turning.
Or, concentrate on catching fish rather than looking 'good'
