Vapour shield more problems than it cures ?
I keep hearing about problems with peoples shelters going mouldy yet again a mate I spoke to today found mould growing because of it
the claim it reduces condensation seems false ?
as all it does is hide it the condensation clearly is STILL forming on the inside of the skin AND THEN if you pack up leaving the vapour shield in place the problems begin
the truth is it does NOT work ANYWHERE NEAR AS WELL as a skull cap due to the fact there is no air flow as with a skull cap
and cant easily be seen like you can with a skull cap my skull cap stays on almost all the time but I always check it with my Microfibre sports towel automatically and its rare its needed like a skull cap or a winter skin where the air gap is on the outside
so my advice is carry a micro fibre sports towel when you pack up remove the vapour shield and be prepared to dry the shelter
EDIT just in case there are some whooosh readers of this post
and say oh I always dry my shelter out when I get home THE POINT is people may not realise their shelter is wet hidden from view and there for wont think it needs drying

Very similar situation when Trakker introduced thermal underliners for the levelite bedchair . Exactly the same thing happened. And the under side of the bed went mouldy

They don't reduce condensation they just stop it from falling on your head !!
Most none fishing related Tents have an Inner Shell and it certainly works on them, and there's never any mould if you dry them out properly

I would dispute that
I have an awning on my caravan and bought a vapour shield for it when I came to pack up after a long weekend it had not rained at all yet I was shocked and disappointed to find behind the vapour shield the awning was soaking it was never like that before I had the vapour shield I only bought it to try and cut the heat down in the summer
BUT !
yes of course if its been pissing down and the shelter is wet we all dry it out when we get home
but the POINT of the post is people are not realising that there is a wet shelter behind the vapour shield packing it up still in place and therefor
DONT REALISE it needs drying out its a total FACT this is happening mate

Think it's more a case of how it's been made/designed Gerry, remember the very first Aqua Dome were you set the frame up on top of the Groundsheet via lugs, then threw the Outer Skin over clipped/pegged it in , then fitted the inner shell – they was renowned for zero condensation.
Could you imagine modern carp Anglers going through that process – would never happen, it' all got to be instant and fool proof as possible now a days
I've a one man Miltec Tent I use for fishing a water that has zero access and involves long walks (weighs 2kg) have only had the chance to use it a couple of times thanks to Covid, it has a basic clip in inner shell, zero condensation both times used.

the truth is it does NOT work like a skull cap or a winter skin where the air gap is on the outside
Rubbish, they are exactly the same Gerry apart from one does it inside and one does it outside the main skin. I presume you have felt the underside of a skull cap in between that and the main bivvy? It's usually soaking if there is a low dew point or you haven't used a groundsheet........... as is the inside of the main bivvy material with a vapour skin in place, both just stop it dripping on your bonce...
Pack a bivvy away with a vapour shild in place and yes, in certain conditions it will be wet above the vapour shield and you will get mould if left. Pack a bivvy away with a skull cap fitted and yes in certain conditions it will be wet underneath the skull cap and you will get mould if left.
either way dry the shelter out and problem solved....

maybe I havent explained it well and I should have said ?

I will EDIT my post accordingly

Iv used the fox ultra brolly for over 3 years and now using the nash titan hide camo pro.
Both have vapour shield and neither has gone mouldy ..
Think they are a great idea .
Prefer them over the caps 👍🏼

Had the original Avid brolly with the vapour shield about 7 or so years ago the vapour shield used to stop the condensation dropping directly onto me and I just used to remove it as it was only 5/6 toggles so it never went moldy also used to dry the brolly with a microfiber towel have done for years with most of my shelters unless it's sheeting down with rain then no point get it home and dry it out.
My main issue with the Avid brolly was the bag on my bedchair getting wet as even with the compact bedchair I bought for it as it was tight to squeeze in, it was always touching the brolly skin at the head and base of the bedchair and the condensation would run around the skin of the bivvy and soak the sleeping bag especially when knocking one out and shaking the brolly causing the condensation to track, I got shot of it to a mate after a year or so and not long after I had the full V2 brolly system with skullcap and whilst the bivvy wouldn't condensate where the coverage of the skullcap was the rest of it would, I've spent a lot of my adult life living in damp caves I've just accepted it these days.

The fact that they are called shields is a bit of a give away really . All they are doing is ‘shielding' it from the angler . Of course the moisture will sit in between.

Same as any inner capsule, condensation build up will still happen on the underside of the outer layer.
Now I pal has the new fox ventec and he removed his only to watch his rear vents wet out as water came through the poorly chosen material used to hold back the rear vents.

Gerry
For a double wall tent to reduce condensation I am pretty sure that the layer of air between the layers of fabric should be static, to allow it to insulate. Air flow would mean you have cold air adjacent to the inner wall, which would completely negate the purpose of having two layers of fabric with an insulating layer of air between them.
If you've got air flow under your skull cap... what is the skull cap actually achieving? Nothing!

I have the titan hide pro and have had no trouble with mould. The vapour shield may stop some drops but I have also found that the amount of condensation is still alot less with the vapour shield in!
