So, I have replaced my broken Fox Rx (old style not plus) with an ebay purchase but it doesn't beep on my receiver.

Have you set the dip switches in the back? in the battery compartment of the rx and receiver there are some dip switches you have to have the alarm the same as what your receiver is

I have done nothing other than switch it on and get annoyed

There are 8 switches which are either up or down it doesnt matter what configuration you use ie 1 up all the others down as long as they are all the same

Yep that worked, amazing, thank you.
Only had to put batteries in them once and noticed those little buttons, had no idea what they did! Bit fiddly but nothing my 3x rig tying specs and a baiting needle couldn't sort!

Best thing to do is change them all to be the same but a number that's relevant to you like a date of birth or wedding anniversary. That way you are less likely to come across another person with the same alarms bearing the same code as you. If you do, then you'll pick up his bite indicators and he'll pick up yours.
