Look at the vortex solo monocular if you want compact - they do a 8x25. Been using a monocular for years. You dont get as wide field of vision, but for what i use it for (spotting bubblers etc) it is great.

bought some Opticron Oregon 4 PC 8x42 for my day session tackle bag this summer and they have been great, given its quite a technical area its worth (IMO) taking some expert advice on intended usage before buying.

40s aren't going to be compact tho.
25s are compact, personally I think 32s are the right balance between size and viewing quality for fishing
I think I'm going to get a decent pair of 32s and get shot of my 25s and 42s

not especially compact, but they pack down smaller than when in use. not an area of expertise of mine granted!

I have a few the Bushnell H2o binoculars LINKY POO 
AND
the Nikon Sportstar EX 8x25 LINKY POO
and 4 other pairs that are very good in very low light but that comes at the expense of being huge in size
hard to pick a winner both linked binoculars are surprisingly bright clear images for a 25mm end lens size
and OF COURSE 8 times is about as strong as you want or need for our use
any stronger and the field of view alters and they jump all over the place at the slightest movement from you

because I been fishing for carp since 1962 and you tend to accumulate things over time
I have owned and used 17 different single stoves 4 different double burner stoves 2 different cadac cooker 2 different Cobb cookers 3 Trangia stoves sets
5 different bait boats 2 inflatables 3 motors
21 head torches
and dont get me started on Rods ,reels ,alarms.bedchairs chairs,brollys . bivvys braids monos and fluorocarbon lines
I would be here all day lol
am easily tempted
thats why when I recommend something its not like SOME people recommending just the one they happen to be using

Mine neither, but I found 25s wanting, and 42s just a bit too big a lot of the time.
I'm kind of tempted by some 12x stabilised bins but I don't want to pay for them

That is a big part of it, especially when they're most needed at dawn and dusk. Bigger just gives a clearer, brighter more comfortable view
I also find it easier to hold the bigger heavier ones steady, so where 8x is my absolute max for 25s I can hold 12x50s about as steady

I would rather have that extra magnification and clarity in weaker light, they are a lot smaller than my Leupold 10X50's and I find them very comfy to use. I am probably easily pleased though.
