High guys looking to invest in a new camera for self takes, in the past I've used and old Canon 350d or a equally old IXUS 950 compact.
I am by no means a competent photographer, but do understand the basics of aperture, depth of field, ISO etc.
I admit to being confused by the vast array of DSLR, Mirror less, and compact cameras.
Ideally I'd like a Canon as I have past experience with their controls, I also like the idea of a flip screen to make self takes easier.
I have a budget of around £500, I'm also happy to buy second hand.
The Canon M50 has been mentioned and looks good , (around £400 second hand on mpd.com, body only) but I'm unsure about what lens would be right for self take requirements .
I also like the idea of something as small as possible but not sure if that would compromise on picture quality or not ?

Earlier this year I wanted to move over to a DLSR but didn't want the bulk of that size camera so went for something slightly smaller more compact but still with great picture quality like the DLSR would give . So I went for a Canon mk1 eos m6 mirror camera maanaged to get it from the curry's discount shop of eBay which is a lot more compact and allows you to plug an intervalometer into it .It also has the flip up screen it came with a lens but I went for better quality lens which was Canon 32mm f1.4 STM EF-M lens which takes quality pictures . I did look at the Canon M50 mirrorless camera but it didn't allow you to connect a intervalometer to it

Thanks thats interesting , what's the advantage of the 32mm lens , read a lot of guys use this lens over the kit lens but not sure what the advantage is ?

Not quite sure I think with the 32mm lens you don't need to have the camera so far away like you do with the likes of a 50mm lens I'm no wiz with camera just took some advice of other members on here that are a bit more knowledgeable with cameras and the best sort of lens setup they recommended and the and went with that and have been very happy with the self takes I've taken with it and the picture quality

I've been recently looking myself and have come to the conclusion that for me the Canon M50 is the one, you can download an app onto your phone for the intervalometer and also control all the settings remotely from there also, have the phone on a bucket next to you and bingo.

32mm lens on a cropped sensor is an equal for a 50mm on a full frame.
This lens will be suited to shoot realistic pictures. So, no big angle photos and unbalanced relation between fish and angler.
Also, most likely, depending on the lens you buy, these lenses will have a better light sensitivity than a kit lens. The diafragma will have a smaller number, 1.2, 1.4 or 1.8f.

Yes the M50 does look good, had a look at the reviews for the M50 mark 2 and there doesn't seem a lot of difference between the two for stills photography, but there is for video.

The 32mm lens I've looked at are at least the same price or more than the camera body, am I looking at the right thing ?
The kit lens is a Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM, would that take a decent self take and if not, (in lay man's terms please ,) what would the 32mm lens provide extra ?

I have the m50 and you cant shoot with a delay between shots, it just shoots whatever number of shots you tell it too in rapid succession. Bit of a pain really for self takes.

This 15-45 MM will take decent photos but die to the high diafragma the depth of field will be larger, meaning more items in the back of you and the carp will be sharp, meaning the carp won't stand out.
Btw, have a look at 3th party lenses, sigma is a good brand and cheaper than Canon lenses.

If you already own an Eos you can buy an adaptor which allows you to use the canon EF lenses.obviously not much help if you don't 🤷♂️
