I was thinking, using fast tapered rods and and a bait boat seems a waste on big waters, wouldn't it be better to use a smaller rod that's through action for winching in weed beds and have more control over fish that head towards them, or just a through action generally?

I use my Tackle Box CFX 10ft 3.25lb (they are really 3.5lb as I've said previously) on my pit. I pull weed beds the size of a small car in by walking backwards with them. They bend under the reel seat under full curve. Gorgeous to play a big carp on... But enough power to deal with a very weedy big pit. My 12 foot rods are all redundant these days.
