Hi all

I've just come back from a good session on Thorpe Lea where I used back leads for the first time in ages.

The main reason was the swims are very close and I didn't want my lines cleaned out by a running fish at 2am (as had happened the previous night).

I would rather have fished semi slack lines but figured that having the back leads might also prevent the carp from getting spooked if they brushed the line.

I was fishing at about 18wraps onto a gravel bar and there's quite a lot of silk weed. I did catch a decent fish

Would others use back leads in this scenario ?

I try to avoid using back leads where I can, especially in weedy waters, but having heard so many stories about Thorpe Lea with errant casting, dubious boundaries between swims etc I would probably use a back lead as you described to try and avoid as many of these unwanted scenarios playing out

There are 101 reasons to use back leads and 101 not to, play it by ear, think of topography and like you said other anglers and potential problems, set up properly back leads are fine

I tend to use back leads at night for the same reason and often during the day some times depends on the swim
