Looking at using a spomb but have never used one before. What would you guys recommend?
Also am I able to use a 12ft 3.5tc rod with synchro XT mainline as a spod rod? Do I need to change to braid mainline?

I've used a few and rate them all tbh in different situations.
The Nash on is probably the best for distance but doesn't take as much bait.
But for short and medium work I really rate the spider spod.. opens all the time and can take a decent amount of bait

Spombs do my head in sometimes, simply because they don't always open. The spider spods open every time and cast well.
I will say though, get yourself a spod rod and braid as well. Even a midi size spomb could end up causing a some damage to your standard carp rod after a while. There's plenty of cheap spod rods out there going between 60 and 100 quid.
Your xt mono won't cope with spodding, you need braid. ESP spod braid is really good with ESP 35lb shock leader.
If you don't want to use a shock leader, use 30lb Berkeley Whiplash straight through. Soak in water and have the spool spinning under tension with a damp towel to help prevent wind knots.

Hi Alex, a small or medium spomb will be fine on the set up you mention as long as you're not trying co cast serious distances. You'll be golden up to 60 or 70 yards I imagine. Your 15lb line will probably also be ok, again as long as you're not trying no trying to cast to the moon.
If you need to cast a lot further then keep an eye out for a dedicated spod rod/reel set up, but using your 3rd rod till then isnt a problem.

That's good to know cheers. I only fish small to medium lakes at the moment so probably 50 yards will be the maximum I'm casting. I just need something to get me a nice tight bed of particles around my bait.
Would using any kind of leader be helpful and what spomb or spod would you recommend for short distances?

Small/spomb with bait totalling 4-5oz will be fine with your set up without shock leader.

At 50 odd yards, as Phil says, you'll be fine. Of course casting technique might be something to consider so long as you're not snapping at it too much, although wouldn't think you'll do that at the range you've given.
The Wychwood spod reel is decent enough to get started with it you venture into a dedicated reel/rod combo. A little on the heavy side but at that price; seems reasonable. Around £50-ish. And then a rod, as mentioned you can pick up fairly cheap around £60/70 or less if 2nd hand.

I use a small spomb on a 2.75 tc 9 foot rod it's ok no problems at all just in clip the lead and clip the spomb on.
The medium overloads it I wouldn't go mad on it as I know it will probably break if I gave it the big one
Should think it willl be fine on yours

50yds I'd just add ground bait and use a catty/bait spoon to get it out. More attraction too

The Nash Dot Spod would probably be suitable also.

I bought the Wychwood spod rod and reel combo package. The rod does the job just fine but had problems with the reel . Line kept going under the spool and wrapping round the spindle. I lost patience with it and bought the Sonik Vader spod reel. Much better
