The best are the freshest you need to buy them from someone who sells lots so the stock is the newest
the brightest is Green as its the natural colour of the gas the dullest is red
the brightest are the biggest as it contains more gas as other have said Darrencarp on Ebay is the place to buy

Probably me - maximum Ilu that can be sold for Civilian use is 600, and have a estimated 25 year lifespan.
Hence they are all just the same regardless of size or colour, colour wise Green is the brightest as a humane eye perceives it.
In the dark it's White that's actually the brightest, hence just about every artificial light source is white.

Does anyone actually put icotopes in anything other than their indicators?
Rods, alarms, net, distance sticks, bivvy door zips etc. You would need £400s worth to fill every slot you have.

IN 1967 I was driving a lorry and made a delivery to a factory and the guy made me a cuppa while his workers unloaded we got chatting and he told me about the isotopes they sold he had just come back from a trade show
and showed me the display samples
and told me what they used them for mainly marine instruments and emergency signs etc the display showed all shapes and sizes and think I remember him saying the glass isotopes contained twice atmospheric pressure he said they only deal with trade
BUT !! after 5 mins of chatting he agreed to sell me 2 of the trade samples the cigarette size ones they were super super bright so much they would light up the ground below them
I came up with lots of ideas how to make them into indicators in the end I found that the fairy liquid bottle tops had a perfect push fit holder in them )
I am sure at this time 1967 nobody was using them ............OR using fairy liquid bottle tops ? (unless you know different)
any way fast forward a few years and after a few accidents new laws came into effect governing the production of Isotopes and the pressure and amount of gas was reduced quite a lot and now the very strict laws means that ALL isotopes that you can buy will ALL BE THE SAME size for size ITS THE LAW
things that affect brightness is SIZE bigger means more gas so brighter
age they do slowly get duller the early ones prior to legislation would be good for 25 years no problem but now its more 15 to 18 years and they dull considerably
