Fairly recently back into fishing after quite a long break. I always used lead-core and have continued to do so since getting back into it.
I'm moving to a new water which doesn't allow leaders, which is cool, and am considering naked chods as a potential plan of attack (as it's also pretty weedy).
However, 10 years ago we were always told to use tubing or leadcore or some kind of thicker leader to protect the fish during the fight. But now we don't need to?
What's changed? Did we learn it was just guesswork and wasn't necessary after all?
Or mainline trends are now for thicker breaking strains so less concern on lifting scales?
Or maybe it never made much odds if you were using long hooklinks?
Curious how the culture changed really and if there are still any concerns of mainline straight through with no 'protection'.

I only ever used tubing for anti-tangle purposes really, and then only if leaders were banned.
I've never known bare monofilament lift a scale, or even damage a fish. I can't see how it could tbh. Braid might cause injury, but I've never used it as a mainline, so no idea.

Ive always found it odd for venues to have rules about tubing etc to protect fish. Yet they allow, float fishing, surface fishing, zigs etc. Which all have exposed mono around the fish. I fish naked helicopters all the time now and not noticed any issues with scales lifting, damage to fins etc

Oh yeah, of course, hadn't thought along the lines of floater fishing and zigs. It was contradictory from that perspective all along.
Well, I shall get naked with confidence moving forwards!

I think you would be okay on mono, braid might cause problems and are more likely to lift scales and maybe damage fins, so would be good to stay on mono if you are concerned. 12-15lb breaking strain shouldn't cause much damage if any but if you want to be even more safe then you can use tubing. If you are using a heli then I think korda do a tubing heli kit, not used myself but worth checking out if you want to do a tube helicopter rig.

I've lifted scales on fish from fishing straight through helicopter, I changed over to 30lb fluro on a 6ft leader to stop it.
