Always wondered why some days I catch just commons and others, just mirrors? That's on waters where there is a seemingly even mix of the two. Any thoughts?

I believe that many of them do act differently to mirrors. I stocked ten commons into my little place six years ago, so far only three of them have seen the bank. There are mirrors that are yet to be caught, but a much lower percentage.

I am sure that commons and mirrors have different food preferences, but I am also convinced that carp that came from spawn in a water behave differently to fish grown on pellets and then stocked. In rich waters natural fish are like a different species

I remember hearing something on a Podcast about this, Simon Scott maybe discussing why we associate catching the big Commons on a full moon, something to do with the Mirrors are less likely to feed then (can't remember why) leaving the Commons to get caught. So it would appear there is a definite difference between them.

I've always believed that commons fight harder, and on a syndicate I used to fish, there were two commons around the 25 pounds mark, and we only ever heard of them being caught on particles, never on boilies.

That's my experience too. A 15lb common will often give you a better fight than a big blob of a mirror.

I think that's more due to body shape I've generally found the long lean torpedo shaped fish in the 20-25lb bracket fight like mad.

Commons do behave different from mirrors as a dog behave different from others dogs or us as the humans behave different from the others, in the same way as a common can behave different from others commons.
The food preference is what we can see more than often, the following story highlight a different behavior between the two I experienced.
In 2001 I found a little very nice lake and, as a starting point, I fished it with maize and bird food boilies fruity flavoured. The first carp caught were mirrors, not very big indeed. After a while I ditched the maize and fished only birdfood boilies. The first common was the biggest I had from the lake at that moment and it was the only one that year from the 8 I had.
In 2002, after a cold winter the first carp came in February, a common, after this that year I had all mirrors, as an aside, in the summer I start to fish with fishmeal boilies together the birdfood. Fishmeal caught nothing.
In the same way goes the first part of the 2003 fished it with the trusty fruity bait. In that moment I classed the lake as predominantly mirrors. That spring I put up a spicy bait to fish side by side the bird food. From that moment onwards the spicy bait outfished the other 10 to 1 and the carps become conditioned on it as well. From that moment the commons got caught more than the mirrors so that in the end I think the population of carp were almost the same from both species.

In a word........ No
Same species.
Other factors may cause different fish to act differently to others such as body shape, strain, how they were reared, wild strains as opposed to farmed, but all king Carp are just that.... Carp.

It's funny cause a syndicate I used to fish , when fishing a certain area of the lake I always used to just catch the original commons and never the stocked mirrors
