Has anyone used the deeper rod mount? I am considering buying one as I'm fed up of trying to hold a rod and my phone in one hand, but scared I'll go to cast out and my iPhone will end up in the lake 
Or if not the rod mount, are there any other suggestions?

I've used the rod mount and it was generally OK, only issue I found was when my rod got greasy/messy from spodding the grease meant the rod mount just spins round.
My advice is to buy a phone mount that attaches to an adjustable Bankstick. That way you have both your hands free, and not concerned about dropping you phone in the drink.

I personally use a similar mount on the back of my chair or on a storm pole/bank stick.
Instead of paying for the deeper mount I bought a bike phone mount with the adjustable strap at the back that attaches to my my chair frame of bank stick

I bought one and must admit, it's pretty much useless on my rods which are thin Jap shrink wrapped handles, it slides around like a child on a bouncy castle.
You also wouldn't want to have your phone attached with it when you welly the deeper out.
I bought a cheap tripod which extends to about 1.3m height and can fit a tablet or a phone and it's much better IMO.

I would second the suggestion of a phone holder mounted on a bankstick.
Or alternatively just place the phone on top of a bucket (but not always ideal in sunny conditions as can be hard to view the screen properly).
