What knots do you use to tie backing line to your mainline... finding a back to back grinner a bit big really.
Do you tend to use a low diameter line for the backing my spools are not massive (310m capacity but as I fish close in doesn't seem much point loading it decent line)

Google 4 turn water knot, it's very small when tied correctly. if you are using smaller bait runner type reels then just pack the spools out with insulation tape rather than backing up with line , just make sure you on keep the tape level . For big pits that's a pain in the ass so back up with mono, i usually use cheap 20lb mono if I've got no old stuff anywhere

Backing spools with insulating tape has a major problem. Because mono stretches in use it continually compresses the tape. The adhesive on the tape is squeezed out and contaminates the line sticking it together. It will soon move all the way up through the line. I speak from experience. Not good.this idea comes up every now and again. Don't do it.

This happened to me too, never again. I'll always use backing, just a lighter line on smaller spools.

I used to do it all the time when I used bait runners and never once had a problem hence saying it. I've not used small reels for about 10 years now but did for the 20 before that and always used tape

No, because I don't use any small spooled reels other than for float fishing or feeder fishing which I don't back up with anything . I found it a pain on big reels as I said and that's all I use now for carp as I fish for multiple species and don't have room for huge amounts of tackle at the house so have to use what covers most situations

I back all my reels out with old mono, then use a loop to loop knot for for the connection. I place a small tab of Tamiya masking tape (its yellow) over the knot, to tidy it up and to allow me to see if I am getting near the backing, not that is very likely to happen. It's hardly rocket science

I back up my spools using old mono, usually 15lb, and when i get to the point that i want to put my new line on i then finish off the backing with a couple of turns of pvc electrical tape in the centre of the spool to hold down the backing. This now acts like a spool reducer and works perfectly.
The new mono is joined to the spool (not the backing line) with a two turn grinner and positioned at the base of the spool.
