Your EHIC (was the E111) will expire this year. There is a new card to replace it called the GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). This is free and replace so od the benefits available under the old EHIC,

Was told they are valid until the expiry date on them, mines 2022, is this not true??? Just read your link EHIC cards are valid until expiry date.

When to apply for a GHIC
UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are still valid and offer the same cover as GHICs in the EU.

Once your EHIC has expired, you'll be able to replace it with a GHIC.

Your EHIC is valid until the expiry date . They ( U.K. Gov ) are asking that you do not apply for. GHIC until this time

Cheers Ken, will look into this.

Latterly threw my card away 2days ago and after reading up in Ken's link they are still valid E111 until they run out.
I've applied again so will see if I get the E111 or the new type 👍

Sorry for the misleading info. If you currently hold and EHIC it remains valid until the expiry date. The GHIC takes over from it once it has expired.

I applied early jan and it arrived today - fancy union jack design, I did joke if you turn up in a French hospital with that they would just put you down
