Going to have a go at hitting the river in search of carp for the first time. Will be looking to take the absolute minimum of gear and was after recommendations for a decent small rucksack and roll mat. Preferably a rucksack that can store the roll mat on top or something. What are you river carpers using?

Im not a river carper but wanted to scale down a bit on my kit. I now use aqua roving rucksack. This is coupled with fox camo unhooking mat which clips on bottom of roving rucksack.
Definitely recommend both.

Had the Aqua roving ruckbag lining came away and a lot of the zip pullers came off this is a common problem with it wouldn't recommend I bought a korum very good at half the price

As a size guide the korum fast mat is about the same size closed as the thinking anglers rucksack
Use a couple of carabiners and clip the mat to the carry handles on the rucksack and hang it over the pocket sides leaving the carry straps free to put on

I've had the ta twice it's quality and well thought out but like a lot of people on here and at the lake it's very uncomfortable if don't won't the korum then the esp camo is very comfortable

I've had the drennan 30lt for river it's ok a bit narrow have to dig around to get at gear comfortable enough it's not bad I've had most rucksacks in the last 36yrs cotswold Nash army esp ta Aqua wychwood fox drennan etc as you can see I am a bit of a rucksack lover the most comfortable one is the esp

Thanks all, that's given me something to have a look at. The korum stuff looks very practical. I'd never have thought to look at them so 👍
I have the ESP rucksack and quiver... Highly recommended

If your doing a lot of walking have a look at some army style rucksacks they are far more comfortable to carry in my experience, fishing bags are too square and don't sit properly on your back. Also don't go to small on the rucksack or you'll end up taking other bags which defeats the object. I use a 60l kombat rucksack for shorter sessions like 24 hours and a 90l Bergan for longer sessions

Most army bags have molle points on the bases which you can clip a mat to via carabiners

I've had army one very good quality and comfortable but very narrow end up putting everything on ground to get at gear also tt didn't stand up have to lay it down if your going army route a army camshell worth a look

Something like this helps with the issues you get with Bergen's as it all gets lost inside, these bags have lots of external pockets as well as internal zip pockets and dividers, they also stand up quite well as they have a wider base then taper up
