Can't get out to a local tackle shop to pick brains but was wondering...

I've been doing a fair bit of lure fishing for bass recently and wanted to do a bit of lure fishing for freshwater species.

Ideally targeting perch but understand that it's very likely I'll hook into pike at some point what sort of gear do you recommend? My bass setup is a 8'6 7-24g rod with a 3000 sized reel and 20lb braid, sounds overkill for perch but maybe not so much for pike?

What's the best way to deal with this as most of the waters locally contain both perch and pike and I don't really want to ruin the sport of fishing for the perch with heavy tackle and wire traces etc.

I'm not an expert, but whilst we wait for one to arrive and post...here's what I read was quite good for Perch fishing (without getting bitten off)

Drennan ESox soft strand

Yeah I intend to do the same as I do when fishing for bass and use a length of fluro leader

If there's even the slightest chance of a pile use a wire trace, low breaking strain knot2kinky or something like, not fluorocarbon.

I recon your gear will be ok to start with. But if there is a chance of pike use wire. I use K2K or Nitinol... titanium stuff is great and I use it down to 6lb bs although I have never got on with knotting it and much prefer crimps. . Perch ain't that shy of wire.

Sorry to jump in just starting out perch/pike fishing. Is this tie able in 6lb or need crimping?

In my experience knot2kinky does not crimp very well, the stretch in it kept pulling out when I did try it. I believe they do advise knotting. The nitinol wire is also meant to be good but haven't got round to trying it.
