Hi guys,

I was wondering If you would use Asa foetida in pure powder form or as a Oleoresin? And why please?

Thanks!

I have never used Asafoetida in either form but have played around with other oleoresins.

Oleoresins are stronger than a powder, depending who you believe and probably the supplier, they are between 5 and 20 times stronger than the base powder so you can use less of it.

Oleoresins are generally non-water soluble but can add palatability and digestion properties to a bait. The dried powder almost certainly has some water solubility in it which as well as the above will possibly aid in attraction.

Oleoresins often contain more of the original 'flavour' than essential oils. As an example Black Pepper EO is often sold to carp anglers as 'high in piperine which attracts carp' but most Black Pepper EO does not contain piperine Black Pepper Oleoresin can contain up to 40% piperine You can source Black Pepper Oleoresin quite easily if you look further than the bait suppliers

One side effect of Oleoresin is that as they contain so much of the original source in a concentrated form (unlike EA that is just the 'top notes') they can be very potent when working with them. Capsicum Oleoresin can be used to make tear gas

So to answer your original question I don't know! However I would perhaps try using a bit of both, I currently have a bait I am playing with that has Fenugreek and Fenugreek Oleoresin in it for the reasons outlined above

Pretty sure the Howler from DT Baits contains asafoetida and is something I have found to be effective in a fishmeal. The little blue tubs with a yellow lid from Asian supermarkets are what I have used recently, also with positive results. It mixes well with fenugreek in my experience along with garlic.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. Really appreciated.

I am going to use it on a meat meal mix with poultry meal, silk worm meal, liver and the like.

I found this Asa foetida oleoresin (water-soluble): https://www.feedstim.com/essential-oils-oleoresins/oleoresin-asafoetida-79.html

With this black pepper oleoresin: https://www.feedstim.com/essential-oils-oleoresins/essential-oil-black-pepper-22.html#/litres-25_ml

I read several times that this is a great combo.

Very good combo 👌🏼 Black pepper, tumeric and Asafoetida. Been brilliant on the river and lakes this year.

Hi
I have used Asafoetida essential oil on the whole it was purchase from the now defunct Baitstream which was a good reputable company till it was sold by Martin and Scot. 500ml cost £650 ,it was pucker stuff.
I have purchased several from Ebay ,most coming from India all were pretty much Rubbish.

I have had asafoetida oleoresin many years ago still have some but it was not in the same league as the EO

What you have found looks OK so go with that ,but what I would really recommend is you get rid of the Poultry Meal we tested this many years ago ,caught to start with then couldn't buy a bit with it.

Carp are not equipped to digest it (just as they are not able to digest refined Milk protein )
So simply would not use it in Carp bait.

A small amount of refined Milk protein though, mixed with a fish meal appears to be quite attractive to carp though.
A hi refined milk protein bait will stuff up a carp for a week or so,.

Thanks all for your input!

Hi Sam, thanks for responding too! Interesting stuff!

But, does this (lack of digestability) also apply to liver meal then (as this is mostly from pigs) and for peanut meals?

Milks bunging up carp is really a throwback to the years that high levels of casein and insoluble products were used.

Whey hydro and the likes of calcium caseinate certainly don't clog them up.

Just how much liver meal are you going to put in your bait?price wise you will be able to put a lot more poultry meal in for your buck,,in any case liver seems to work as a laxative.
The chicken meal is from experience, would not put any in a bait.
Peanut meal does not appear to cause them any problems to pass through.

as i said nothing wrong with a small percentage of refined milk protein ,soluble or insoluble, soluble for preference but you are unlikely to be making a bait out of just those two you mentioned.

Hi,

The mix I made now uses 10 percent liver meal and 25 percent poultry meal.
Are you sure?
