Good afternoon,
Thinking about the different ways to combat bitterness in high ratio fishmeal baits.
I've been thinking along the lines of betaine and/or thaumatin.
The mix consists of.
50% fishmeal.
25% birdfood.
25% milks.
Has anyone fixed the issue in a different way?
Or am I on the right lines?
Thanks Tom.

I have always found that the baits I have done best on, have a rounded flavour profile.
So just trying to achieve this.
Thanks Tom.

Strange you have bitterness in the old style Premier FB type mix?
My only thought - does the mix contain PDF...and if so, how fresh is it?

The mix has both lt94 and pre digested both purchased from bacarel and in date although not long left it could potentially be the high level of pre digested as I have been upping percentages to get a more soluble mix.
Thank you Tom.

ok, if you have any left that you've not used in making the base mix, give it a quick smell and taste test. I have some also from Bacarel that went off really quickly recently

Thank you.
I did think maybe I would have to taste each ingredient individually as a process of elimination.
That's interesting you had a similar experience.

Yeasts can be used to make fish meal baits more 'Palatable' , I include up to 50g yeast in most of my mixes for varying reasons , Brocacell would be my go to for a fishmeal base

Thanks carpe diem I have used that ratio previously too.
I think it could be the high level of the pdfm as it's currently half of the overall fishmeal content.

It doesn't taste massively bitter, not having a fresh batch to compare it too probably doesn't help 😝.

Exactly Do carp experience the sensation of "a bitter taste", so to speak, when foraging on naturals ? Which receptors "fire on all cylinders", when a palatant is introduced into the mix ? Positive extraoral vs intraoral stimulation ?
Are you sure?
