Hi all
I'm looking to buy my son some new rods.
He's currently using 9ft diem rods which are OK to be fair but they are only a 2 1/2tc.
We struggle to get any sensible distance with them so thinking of upgrading to dwarfs.
Not sure if I should get 3lb tc 9fts or 3lb tc 10fts?
Hes almost as tall as me already so maybe the 10fts will last him longer?
Any feedback would be appreciated r

Slightly different idea, my lad is eight but tall for his age and I got one of my old 2 1/4 test rod which had a couple of inches missing from the top and sawed a few inches off the butt. New tip ring and a new handle on the bottom. Cheap answer till he gets the hang of it a bit more.

Main thing is the handle length In relation to arm length. As a youngster I had 12ft float rods but they came with adjustable reel collars so you could fit them to your arms length.

One was when retrieving a small lead
No weed etc. The next was in the garage, pulling some line
Off the reel lol.

My Mrs is 5' (& probably weighs less than the typical 11yr old boy!) & handles 12' rods fine. The trick is balancing the rods with the reels. If you have a combination that makes the tip feel too heavy, then he will struggle regardless of length. Personally I would always go for a 12' rod unless bankside swim conditions on your water dictate a shorter rod be needed as it will last him a lot longer than a 10' rod (especially if he moves on to larger waters where he needs the longer length to control fish over margin weed etc).
Rods are a personal item & what suits one angler maybe completely different for the next. Find a shop that stocks a large range of rods in all sizes & brands & go have a look at what is available. A good shop will let you put your own reel on the rod to see how it feels (if they won't then walk away). If you are in the Midlands, Future Fishing at Newark have probably the largest selection of rods out on display & the staff are always helpful in there.
