I have just bought myself a spod rod (EOS 5lb) and reel (Shimano 10,000 Spod), which comes with 30lb braid. I plan to use this at the wknd to spomb and wanted to ask if you think I'd be able to use the braid straight through? Or would a shock leader be required?
I was also planning to use my Deeper on the braid but worried about cracking off.
Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

all depends how far your casting and heavy the spod but just for peace of mind id personally put on a shockleader !
don't forget a finger protector mate, those cuts can be nasty !

get your self some chap 0.20 floating braid of ebay and attach some esp braided shock leader ,tied correctly will cast out all season long no issues,

I would add a 45 or 50lb braided shockleader - enough for 3-5 turns on the spool at the point of casting. My personal favourite is kryston quicksilver in 45lb.
Mahin knot is perfect for attaching braid-braid.
you should be good for 100-120 yards with that set up.

I've got two types of leaders; Amnesia 30lb and Armo Kord 50lb. Not used the latter yet as the Amnesia is bang on so far. I've got Whiplash & Kastking braid both 50lb. Again, not used the latter to comment as Whiplash is highly recommended by lots, mega overpriced compared to the KastKing. £26 vs £8. Wanted to test them and compare. Simple 3 turn blood knot for the spomb on to the leader. Mahin knot for the braid to leader.

I have had 50 pound whiplash on the last 6 year and still going strong and can cast just as for than having a lower braking strain on

ESP mono tapered leader. . .no need for a finger stool. Works perfectly for both spod/spomb & deeper . . .

Use leader mate , i use some 65lb braid i brought off Amazon and it is superb teamed up with the Daiwa J Braid , casts like a dream
