What size lead do you use for feature find/leading around? Some articles say a light lead, some say a heavy lead. Do you use the same lead size that are on your baited rods?

Big marker lead with lobes on it so you they catch bits of weed etc so you can see what's down there as well as feel it, light leads don't really give you much feeling so can't see the point myself

I always use the same I plan to fish with. Normally a 3 or 4.

For fairly close range on silty waters I'll use a 1oz lead because a bigger lead will easily go through soft silt and 'touch down' on a firmer substrate below. A light lead is also better for finding those lovely slightly firmer areas of silt.
I almost always lead about with a rig on as well to pick up bits of weed, dead leaves etc.

Yep. Same as. I use the same lead I'm fishing with. I can't see the point in using a light lead that settles on weed that gives you the impression you could fish there, then putting on a heavy lead which crashes the rig right through it. Or vice versa.

For me the aim is to know what I'm fishing on. So I need to to feeling where my rig will be.

I prefer something 3.5/4oz tournament shaped lead if I can get away with it. You can feel a lot more with a bigger lead imo, though sometimes that can work against you as Andy says. They can also dive through the weed and fool you into thinking the areas clean when it's far from it... That's when the below comes into play.

I don't like to have a rig on or probed lead until I'm clipped up to something that I think might be presentable. I'll then stick on a grappling lead to find out what's really down there. If you start out on a weedy lake with an old rig on or a probed lead you'll manage to pull it 6 inches before it's clogged solid and needs bringing in.

use the lead your fishing with mate - personally a zipp / tourny lead as you can get the weed off them with a flick of the rod....
