So I have only recently got into carp fishing but will be going on a France trip in August to a large lake. (Read: I've already spent a lot of money.)
I bought a Midi Spomb which I read can be used on a normal rod. The only rod I have spare is a cheap 2.75lb rod with a cheap reel to go with it.
I (think) I also have just enough 15lb Korda Subline to go on the reel. (Oh, and a Spomb float...).
Is this all I need to get by for now?
I've read that I should have some sort of leader attached as well. Forgive me if this is a stupid question but what should I buy and how would I tie it all together?
If the rod and reel really isn't suitable, can anyone suggest a low budget alternative?
I'd also want to double up it's use as a marker rod as well.

I think the midi spomb overloads a 2.75 rod
A small spomb is miles better for that rod
You haven't said what tc the main rods are

I think you will find you'd be quite limited distance wise using the setup you described, a 3.5lb tc rod or a dedicated spod rod would benefit you a lot more. You can get a half decent spod rod for £50 such as a Wychwood Dispatch or such like.
Braid would be better on the reel but you could get away with a high b/s mono.
For about £70 you could solve any potential issues.

Main are 3lbs. Just bought the 3 new rods hence I now have the 2.75lbs free.

There is not a lot of difference between 2.75 and 3 lb ers
I tried it on a 2.75 and felt the rod was going to snap if I pushed it

It's a mini sponb which you can use on a normal rod, the midi needs a spod rod really, or at least something stiff and 3.5lbtc or more. If you've spent a lot of money already what's another £40 on the right tool for the job?

I would try and get one secondhand if monies tight, a lot will depend on the venue or distance and how much bait you are planing to put out, the odd one or two up to 50/60m you may get away with it, it you are looking at kilos of bait or longer distance, no chance 🙁 if it's just for France can you borrow one for a week?

I've used the greys distance spod rod for both marker and spodding work, really you do need a dedicated rod if you are going to fish at any real distance. These rods do come up cheap frequently on eBay and Facebook market place, I recently picked a next to new one up for £20. Don't be put off buy the cheap price tag thinking it's a crap rod, I've punched large spomb's 150 yard + frequently with one and for several years before needing to replace.
Next you need to sort your line out, pick up a spooL of spectra braid off eBay, I think it's about £20 for 500 meters purchase this in 40lb and use it straight through on the reel you have, no need for a leader which I think would be better if you're new to Carp fishing

Where are you based? I have an esp paragon spod rod you could have gratis if close.
Perfectly useable. I've been using. A pair of them for the last however many years and found them more than serviceable. Only upgraded last year to a FS spoon rod.
