I've just bought some reels that need new line clips. I'm going to make my own on the 3D printer but after searching for ideas I've seen spring kits. What does the spring actually do? I'm thinking it puts tension on the clip and pulls it towards the spool? If this is the case then what's the benefit versus standard?

I have just purchased 3 of these to fit to my Diawa Infinity 5000 reels from South Custom Reels. I had at one point some Shimano 10000xtea reels that had spring line clips fitted. These are a bonus if you are using different line strengths eg 12lb or 15lb line as the clip adjusts to calliper of the line not over pinching the clipped up spot on the line which could cause a breakage. The clips I purchased were stainless steel much more durable than the plastic clips fitted on a lot of reels today. I have had a few plastic clips break so thought I would give them a go. Not cheap but hope they will do the job.

I bought the same clips for my Daiwa Emblem x5000t arrived yesterday took 2 mins to fit.
Be careful getting the old clip out as the plastic peg is fairly weak.. mine flew off the first one I did which is a problem if you go for a different clip type with the conventional spring.

what's the benefit versus standard
The standard line clip is intended to retain the line/prevent line pouring off the spool while the reel is not in use.
A spring loaded line clip is intended to serve as a stop to regulate distance during casting. The spring is easier on the line preventing damage during repeated casts.
