Hi been looking at Harrison Acurix 2.75 t/c which states it will throw a 21/2 ounce lead 100 yds with very little effort and a nice playing action, l have been using free spirit Es rods but struggled after about 80 yds so have also looked at free spirit Xs rods which are decent, so can't make my mind up

The free spirit will do 100 yards easy maybe it's your casting technique that's not allowing you to reach the distance you require maybe look at casting tutorial with the likes of Terry Edmonds or mark Hutchinson before paying out for a new set of rods

Line and reel are as important as the rod. Hitting 100 yds with a 2.5 oz lead from 2.75 rod is a fair cast. If your line and reel are not right you will struggle. Bit of tuition always helps.

The Harrison Accurix have a very soft butt section, they are lovely rods to play fish on but far too soft for casting.
I love mine for small pit or close range fishing but much over 75 yards and they struggle.

My Torrix 2.5lb Rods will achieve 100 yards with 12lb line and a chod rig however that's probably near to their limit or at least mine.

I was told the Accurix have the same tip section as the Torrix but the butt section is much softer, hence they don't cast long range particularly well, they are however very accurate at close range

I dont think that the reel matters too much. as long as the line lay is ok and the spool roughly the right size
Technique, rod, line, lead/rig/bait, then reel imo

Interested to know you don't consider the reel matters too much "as long as the line lay is OK and the spool is roughly the right size". I'd prefer the line lay to be good, always worth a good few yards, and to have a well designed and appropriately
sized spool. Also worth a good few yards. If you don't have the right reel, you don't get the yards. imho
