Beginner ish to carp fishing
What's the best way to put the line on
Seen loads of vids on Utube, with lots of different ways
Surely there should be one proper way of doing it

My way, soak the spool in a bucket of warm water for couple of hours, load onto reel under v slight tension through a tea towel. I always make sure that the line goes onto the reel the same way it comes off the spool. Not saying this is the definitive way but it works for me

So do you have the line on its side or standing up

Look in general carp discussions under "spoiling a reel alone" and it is spoiling, 3 out of 10 for spelling. Look at chuffys post with the photograph. Sorted.

For me this method works better than having the spool on its side. Just make sure you keep a steady pace as if you stop suddenly the spool keeps spinning and you have a bit of a pickle

I have the spool on its side floating in warm water in a cereal storage container and have the line coming of the spool from the underneath which goes on the reel spool with zero twist reeling the line on under tension through 2 fingers

I have the spool laying flat in the bucket, but I think it's key that it's the right way up, which means it's winding on to the reel in the same direction it comes off the spool. 👍🏻

wont it only wind on the reel one way
does that mean you have to have the line the way up that matches the only way it goes on the reel

Going back people used to put a pencil through the spool and get someone to hold it while you wound new line on.
Then someone came up with the idea of allowing the line to come off the lip of the spool with (usually) the label facing you. Then for many including myself it's gone back full circle and back to the first idea but with some improvements such as removing the pencil but achieving the same effect by the putting the spool in a container of water like in post #6.

Plenty of videos on youtube but I like this one which is similar to the one in post #6 but suggests around the 5 minute mark that taking the line off the lip only works for some lines.

I use this method but I put my spool in a narrow cereal container so the spools has no way of toppling over

I have always used something for the spool to spin on a la chuffy and so I was told long ago, avoid line twist. Never had any probs with line twist. Don't know whether this is relevant but I was once working on a farm and the farmer wished to run a water supply about 250 yards using the blue polyprop water pipe. It was delivered on large spools. Instead of the hassle of lifting the very heavy spool and mounting it on a spindle he got a couple lads to pull it over the lip of the spool and he dragged it with th tractor
Result. 250 yard long slinky that would not straighten, lie down or be buried. It has probably become a local landmark by now. Food for thought.

Those converted to that method would say those coils are going directly onto the spool in the same fashion.
Taking your point about the water pipe that's the same as running cable from a drum murder if you do it that way.
I predict arguments for both methods but I'm sticking to the method in my previous post

I'll stick with my method, if youre confident in yours, use it.
