Joined in the hope that someone can help me decide which spod reel to go for.
Ive been looking at either the Diawa Emblem or the Shimano Ultegra XTD Spod......Im being drawn to the Shimano because i use the Shimano XTB reels on my rods and my rods themselves are shimano rods. This might just be me being a tackle tart so I thought i would seek advice from others before making the purchase.
Whats your experience of either spod reel?
Upon choosing the correct spod reel what braid would you choose?

Bought a Daiwa Emblem Spod to fish a large water 4 years ago. Chose this reel as it has real pedigree for reliability and performance over many years. I also like the castlock feature which stops the bale arm releasing early and causing crackoffs. It has performed perfectly for me, wouldn't change it.
As for braid, it depends on use. Korda, Fox etc sell spod braid which work fine. You want extreme range use 8 carrier braid in low diameter, as long as you use a shockleaders you can go very fine on mainline.

I have 12000 XTB,s as well, had the shimano spod reels and sold them after 4 weeks. Way to heavy and very slow retrieve
Now own the new all black emblem spods, they are superb and probably best on market. Got a cracking deal for 2 at Hull Angling

After my Daiwa seized after years of abuse I thought I'd give the XTD a go (I already have XTB reels), really like it actually, feels lighter and smoother than the Daiwa, mind you that was grinding away for years before it finally seized.
Line-wise, Daiwa J x8 braid, same as the Korda stuff but cheaper, smooth casting and doesn't need constantly wetting either

I'm a daiwa feel user, have 3 sets for my fishing rods so went for emblem spods myself in the beginning. 5 years later, 3 seized reels, went over to Shimano, originally with the aerlex spod then the ultegra xtd, haven't looked back, never let me down in over 4 seasons of use.

Used diawa spod reel for years. They are great initially but after a couple of years of abuse they are like a bag of spanner's. Switched to the shimano version a couple fo years ago and its been spot on although i dont think the retrieve is as fast as the diawa.
I'd go shimano personally

Been using the shimano reel on my spomb rod for a year now...i normally fish at range and this reel up to the task, good line lay and good retrieval rate...

Some really useful replies here, doesnt seem like there is all too much difference between the 2, sounds like its based on personal opinion.

Use an Emblem on both my 12ft and 13ft set up, great reels, I have a wychwood on my 10ft spod terrible,

ive been using the wychwood ones for sometime due to the cost and i think i would of been able to pay for 2 shimanos or diawas with the amount of crack offs ive had because the bail arm has a mind of its own.

Have you tried keeping the bail arm open in the positionn position so that it's opening directly away and not opening sideways?
I've had my 5 dais speed reels since they came out, no issues at all.
