I use 6 volt 4.5ah , but they seem to only last an average season of use of charges , are there any better quality

Have a look at the gel filled batteries instead of water much better performance and life.

There are good batteries...and there are cheap batteries..
The two very rarely go hand in hand.
Gel batteries will be what you have now I suspect..
I don't even know if they still make lead acid in that size.
Measure the battery tray space and see if you can find a higher Amp/Hour spec. that fits.
Lipo batteries are roughly 1.5 times better at providing power but you need the charger ideally to balance them.
And if you run them down flat they are usually done for as its a clart on to get them back up to a voltage the charger will recognise.They do however have a much longer total lifespan.
Batteries of the size used in bait boats were never really designed as a motor power source but rather as a source that could last over a long period for such applications as an alarm or a lamp.
Research the difference between a Leisure battery and an Automotive battery if you have time.

I've been looking at these Paul, I too use 6v 4.5 ah batteries for my boat (which I rarely use) as I fish a river mostly.
They seem as though they should do the job better, but they are over twice the price of normal lead acid batts of the same physical size that fits the space.
