How many different versions of these are there?
Reason I ask is I originally had one I bought off Flipper_Al on here, that was a shinier material and had pockets on it. That one the mice had though it's still useable and it was totally waterproof. I recently got another one off eBay, slightly different material, not as shiny and no pockets. Anyway, just had this one on for most of the afternoon setting up in the rain and in certain areas it's leaked, bugger!!
So, what am I looking for to make sure I get the proper waterproof version?

Slightly off track, try using a Poncho in weather like today. Then swap for your gortex once you have set up / sheltered.

I found the only way to guarantee the army ones are waterproof is to buy new. Even the A grade ones leak. None of mine have pockets..

Just get the highlander tempest jacket,not a lot of money and fully waterproof,I've had the army ones,totally pants

There's is loads of versions, there's windproof smocks , shower proof , jungle variants and all sorts. Same with softie jackets.
The Shiny ones are also a heavier ripstop type material and really hard wearing.

Another vote for the highlander tempest. Had mine ten years. It's never let a drop of water through in ten years

As far as I know, there were three "nylon" waterproofs...possibly what you mean by shiney?
The first were based on the olive green NI jacket. Super bits of kit as long as you did not move!
Next generation were a single skinned jacket with flapped pockets.
Then came the lined version that had a black inner, again with flapped pockets.
The first generation Goretex jackets had no pockets.
Second had a slit pocket under the flap and I think, two front pockets.
Like any jacket, they will require reproofing and any used items are washed before they come on the market, and that can affect the waterproofing. Spray with a proofer and they will be as good as new.

All of the British army Gor-Tex jackets are gash these days. Fake Gor-Tex.
Very few companies actually have a licence to use this material on jackets.
If you want the very best, get a US Army, Tennier Industries made, Gor-Tex woodland Parka. If you get one brand new from the States, with import duty you will pay close to £400/£450. I got a brand spanking new one from fleabay for £80, because I'm a lucky sausage, and they was no where near as sort after then.
I got the trousers too. Both are proper Gor-Tex, I've stood at Walthamstow on the 2/3 on a cold February day, it rained non stop for nine hours, hard. I was bone dry. This gear, you could lay in a puddle.
Even the tapes are all stamped with Gor-Tex (R), the main material too. I've had mine for six years now, it's never been treated, it's been washed with just plain water. I can go lay in a puddle in it right now, and not get wet. It's soft, makes no noise and is comfy. Buy once, buy quality. So many top carpers have this exact jacket now, I smile when I see the photos.... I would never ever buy any other waterproof jacket, not a chance.
I've had roughly 7-8 British Army or other Euro versions. All gash, there is only one. The rest are poor copies.
