Hi guys so I was reading bait recipe thread and couldn't really understand why some are using blood meal in the bass mix .

Here is a recipe I found on the thread and I would like to know what de could replace the blood meal with

255g LT94
75g Pre Digest
50g Blood powder ?????
50g Krill meal
150g CLO
100g Vitamealo
100g Soya Flour
100g Semolina
50g Kelp Powder
35g Brewers Yeast
35g Whey Protein.

So from what I can understand it is to harden the bait and also provides other benefits but surely there is other ingredients that could do the same thing and maybe more

Blood powder is a very good low cost ingredient that hardens a bait similar to the expensive milk derived options.
It's high in protein but does make your finished bait a dark colour.

Don't you like the thought/look/smell of blood powder?

Try blood plasma powder, odourless, white and better apparently.................

While it might not be the most sexy and pleasant ingredient to work with, i've always had great results with it in boiliemixes. Not so much with plasmapowder.

Blood powder also used to be a favorite ingredient for pellet manufacturers, aiding palatibility, protein and price of course. Maybe with the strict health regulations these days it has become less popular, but, i could be wrong here though, i believe i saw it listed on a bag of coppens pellets recently.

Anyways, you could ditch it, but i think you could do worse than keeping it in.

The only difference between red and white is the white has had the red blood cells removed.
They both do the same thing. Not positive btw!
I think the white is more neutral in taste and the red a bit bitter.
I prefer the white and only use red if I want it to darken a bait.

Why is using blood plasma not positive? What are the downsides? I read that it gives baits better leakage than baits made with eggs?

Here we go.
I use blood meal in my fishmeal baits to replace part of the eggs.
It aids the leakage of the bait as it is partially soluble.

And does it stink or has negatives, Kenny?

it has a particular smell that's the reason I've been using it only in fishmeal baits but it doesn't stink and it has a high protein content:

Depending on the other ingredients of the mix, high levels of blood meal can result in sticky dough.
So, I would advise max 5% to start with.

I used plasma in the past. a 4/3 ratio plasma - guar gum could replace all eggs used in baits.
700gram of this mixture for 10kg of boilie mix was sufficient.
The combination guar gum and plasma resulted in a special type of skin on the baits.
Very interesting to see

If the quality isn't pure enough, it stinks.
CCmoore's blood plasma is high quality and doesn't stink.

I add blood powder to my mix to darken it. Certainly hasn't had any detrimental effect, plus it helps harden which was my main reason for using it. Fish certainly like it..Only use 15g though which is more than enough.

Hi Kenny,

Thanks for that info again. I just bought half a kilo, just to experiment a bit with it.

I use it in 5% in my I would say average fish mix, always done well on it and do believe it has got a certain big fish pull especially combined with liver, just be careful about chub they love it very very much as well!
Are you sure?
