Ah, well that's ok then, it was the Carps fault for having a damaged tail, (which there is no evidence of) and flapping on the mat....

And for what it's worth it could have been the sling, if one of the Carps tail lobes snags in a hole in the sling that could easily have caused it.

Watching it slowed down what I see is this, the fish flaps and he goes to do the ‘roll it back on to the forearms' trick but in doing so bring his arms together towards the fish's head , the tail end of the fish drops onto the mat folding under slightly and the next kick causes the damage. The fact that at this point the tail is sort of wedged in the corner of the mat against the wall doesn't help the situation.
It's horrible what happen at the carp on the footage. Obviously the angler has his faults, albeit he has done whats everybody should do when the carp flip in that way.
I've seen worst behavior by a carp angler in other vids, one is fixed in my mind since I watched it as a simbol of bad handling, where a well known consultant of a well known carp brand, while he was involved in the process to take the pictures of a really big carp the fish is flipping in his hand and he jump back letting the carp falls hawkwardly on the mat, laughing as well at what's happened. Luckily, in this case, apparently the carp have no issues at all like the one in the OP.

Is it safe to encourage anglers to get into the water? I know anglers do but what about the safety of the angler?

You can still unhook the fish in the landing net and let it swim back if you dont feel like going in water.

Totally agree. Everyone's going to have there opinion on why and how this happened. And I think most of them have been discussed on here.Let's just hope the fish recovers from this as I'm sure it will

Not really a lot more than can be said. Let's have it right there is certain individuals and furry friends that are cAusing a lot more damage to our waterways and stock. I live In Slovakia come and check out the way they treat the fish out here .

Depends on the water levels I suppose, you might not be able to reach down.
Can't see many releasing a 40lb+ fish without wanting a pic though, could be a fish of a lifetime.

Before the thread closes does anyone know what the result of this was? I.e. did the fish survive?
Looks like it is fin that sbapped rather that the tail body so hopefully will at least survive although be disfigured. I have caught a carp with literally no tail fin that seemed to be thriving and had put on weight since last seen on the bank.

Cant see why it wouldnt survive... seen fish with damaged tails from spawning or infection etc and some grow it back nicely, some stay as they are... Not really a life/death situation.

The video I saw was a grainy film of a fb story so not 100% sure whether it was 'just' fin that came off or whether the knuckle of the tail (i.e. part of the body) had snapped off, although I can't really see how that would happen.
