Unless you've been in another galaxy for the last 20 years Putin has done plenty of expansion at the barrel of a gun. Permanent military port and facilities in the Med at Latakia, Syria A reward for propping up another dictator with Russian firepower Assad. Georgia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Chechnya, Armenia etc all had Russian boots on the ground to influence the direction of the populations. Mali, Mozambique, CAR etc all crawling with armed Russians under the mercenary banner of the Wagner group (controlled ultimately by Putin)
Luhansk, Donetsk for the last 8 years with hardly an attempt at hiding their presence.
His fight is against democracy getting nearer to Russian borders. There's no excuses for him TC and apologists for him are as bad.

The last time I looked (years ago) Iraq 1.5 million dead as a result of the illegal invasion that took place on a lie of Weapons of Mass Destruction. No-one would say that Saddam was Mr nice, that was for the people of his country to decide his outcome or an international court, not the US and friends with their liberal sprinkling around the place of dupleted uranium, insurgents all over the show, millions of displaced peoples...shall I continue?
Libya for instance was a fully functional society, Libyans had a high standard of living due to their near sweet oil, Gaddafi was bonkers, there's no denying that, although he was a convenient friend of the UK when they needed him for some bidding, that was until he (Gaddafi) wanted to create an African denomination that would be a rival to the petrodollar, and just like that, he was dead.
Syria has always been allied to Russia, Russia was invited in to help stem the pro western backed forces smashing the country to pieces, hell, even Israel got in on the act and was treating ISIS wounded terrorists in Israeli hospitals much to the horror of senior Israeli army generals...if memory serves me correctly that was posted in Jerusalem Post May 15th 2015.

Pity the West is only prioritising Russia with sanctions.
Oligarchs and vors operate throughout the region, and yes, there are both Ukrainian Oligarchs and vors as much as Russia has in the region as does Belarus.
Pumping God knows how much currency into such a corrupt region for me beggars belief. Ethiopia? (Charity donations could have bought the country 3 times over)
My friends and family are being bombed and threatened, I wear the poppy every year, and I'm pretty sure the slogan is "lest we forget"
