Back in the early '70's the first club I joined had a rule stating that "The auto-strike is banned" I didn't have a clue what one was, but often wondered. In a FB discussion about the twig someone posted an advertising pic of the auto-strike dated 1965, it was a telescopic tube similar to the twig but without the arms. The cocking/release mechanism appeared to be enclosed within the tube. Had AH copied this near 60 year old design there would have been far less of an outcry on the safety front. I can't ever remember it getting talked about in the mags or on the bank, so guess it's production was short lived. Maybe the fish catching ethics were a lot higher them days, if not the fish care once on the bank.
I think other organisations will be unhappy over this we already have bad press regarding RSPCB what happens if any bird life gets caught on this and tethered up and left to die and this monstrosity is attached to it especially if it's a big bird like a swan or geese that can easily pick up a rig without diving.

Perhaps another tackle with reintroduce a version of the 'auto-strike'? No flaying arms so no breaching of copyright.
The catch ethics won't change but with a bit of though it could get it past the safety concerns?
