I make Aidey 100% correct on this. To my mind as far as shop bought baits go, the best ever were T1, Original Active 8, Carp Company Ice Red and Essential B5. With the exception of perhaps the Cell, they've never released another bait thats even in the same ball park as the ones In that list.
Mainline have produced a lot of bang average baits, the fact that they get discontinued says a lot. If they caught loads of fish then people wouldn't stop buying them and they wouldn't stop making them as they'd be selling loads of them. They haven't stopped making cell have they? Because they still shift lots of it. The same can't be said for New grange, assassin8, maple8, fusion, pulse,NRG. Then there's all the mediocre dross of recent years like fibre, link, hybrid this that and the other.
Without the best part of fifteen years of the Korda boys plugging the absolute granny out of Mainline in every video, I tend to agree that they might well have fizzled out.
Let's be honest if I said to you that you have to fish a season on your water using only shop bought bait, no bespoke type hookbaits or home/bespoke feed bait. How many of you would have a Mainline product at the top of your list above all the other stuff out there? Honestly I think not many.
In fact I'd say that mainline would be miles down my list. I'd fish any of the Moores Baits, Baitworks, Essential, Sticky, and Carp Company before I picked probably Cell, which is the only bait in their range I'd even consider. In fact as far as major manufacturers go I'd say only Nash would rank lower.

I'd put money on it that once Danny starts distributing in the UK and not just Europe a lot of that will stop. He puts a lot back into the sport, I've heard first hand many many times what a great boss he is and what a great company to work for they are, but make no mistake he is a hard nosed businessman, and so is Damo, who by all accounts can be f@@king ruthless if he needs to be. there's absolutely no way they are gonna be undercut on a product they distribute. The first time they get feedback from their reps that they can't get shops to stock mainline as there's guys up the road with transit vans full of it, I'm telling you that will stop.

I'm of the opinion that the decline of a bait company is people's fickle nature's. A new 'super' bait hits the market, bundles of paid anglers and the like shill super bait X on YouTube and other media platforms...the rest is history.
The same thing goes on with rigs. This might blow some peoples minds, bear with me on this, you ready for this: the bulk standard hair rig still catches carp, even on some of the hardest of waters, how amazing is that?

It's not illegitimate though, always seemed like it was encouraged. Just another way of getting the bait out there and into the catch reports. I guess these days it's onto the socials and #celllad

It's the opposite with Mainline though, everyone still uses the Cell and nobody is bothered about the new baits.

I was thinking more along the lines of hemorrhaging sales and the anglers that buy a kilo of this and a kilo of that and haven't just sussed out that a good bait is a good bait.

Funnily enough I've never used the Cell ever, come to that, a load of the very popular lines that companies sell. I have used the Krill to great effect in the very early days of it being in the shops.

I've never used it either, I like fishmeal. I've rolled some hook baits using the base mix for an alternative but didn't do much on them.
But I have seen tons and tons and tons of it go in around me!

Credit where it's due. The cell and the Opel cell caught a load of fish from one of my tickets in the early days. I don't see so many people using it anymore.

A place just around the corner from me was heavily baited and fished with the stuff, 6 years ago maybe. Took an age - or so it seemed at the time - to get my own rolled baits to get accepted as a food source. I distinctly remember on the opening day when my ticket just started, the place was banged out, a bloke was hogging a swim for his pal. There had been no takes in 2 days and there were fish all over everyone, matey's pal rocked up, cast out and within 10 mins had a mid 30 on the bank...Cell boys, they'd been piling it in for ages and dominated the water.

I don't really know to be honest. Going by how prolific the Cell has been, it would make me think they obviously like the bait; stating the obvious I know.
I was tempted to use it this year. Should have hunted down someone for a cheap price.
