Why do people want to watch a big carp have its tail snapped off?!
I have seen it, see yes a lot of places insist on large carp being photographed in the water now, but did they used to back in the day?? Nope but greater care was taken, find videos of classic big uns such as the black mirror they are all on large heavily padded matts, love him or hate him this is exactly what nick helleuer mentioned on his Korda podcast metal bars on matts etc and carp don't mix, another point is that back in the day it was a case of one or two guys taking the pics and at least one goalie just out of shot but close enough to help the carp down safely doesn't seem to happen any more.
And as other guys have quite rightly stated he was breaking the fisheries rules and again as others have stated we have all bent the odd one like a snide rod, using a nut when banned etc but fish care ones should strictly be adhered to

I've no intention of watching the video, accidents do happen for many reasons. Surely the unfortunate carp should have been swiftly euthanized rather than put back in the state it was.

I've seen a lot of people blaming metal bars but tbh to me it seems just a normal high sided cradle mat not a metal frame one they are normally higher up

The cradle ones can be just as bad mate the sides are normally very stiff, I hate using mine but one of my locals insists on them

Just watched it.. very unfortunate and because of his ego he will get torn to pieces by the back stabbing, gob ***** angling world. Maybe he has learned to keep his fishing to himself and not seek likes and fame from people he will never meet. Unlucky.

Just watched the video, is it 'just' the fin that came off or has the tail broken at the 'knuckle' - at least if it is just the fin portion there is a chance the fish survived.
It didn't look anything to do with the cradle to me - it landed awkwardly/bent on the flat part of the matt?

Yes it was nothing to do with the mat in my eyes more to do with that 55lb of fish landed on a bent fin. That's why If you have sacked up or retained a fish of this size you should probably stay in the water with it . And to be fair even if it wasn't sacked , it was lively and should have tried to let it calm down instead of having fun In front of the camera with his pals How many times do you think had fishes rib has broken by this happening . Caught loads of fish with broken ribs . It's happened but unfortunately for the angler and whoever he is associated with they are gonna get some stick

In my opinion, as others have said, nothing to do with the mat and everything to do with 50lb of fish coming down on an awkwardly positioned tail fin. Unfortunately for the angler holding it he's the only one that is going to take any amount of blame but his friends should have been helping - “spotting” him if you like. You see it on all the old school videos of fishing being managed for the camera - it's a team effort.
A very unfortunate situation and sad for the angler concerned. I've seen a lot less damage done by a lot worse fish management practices - don't even get me started on the anglers who smash litres of water over their mate whilst their holding fish up for the cameras!!! I can't see that this lad did anything wrong in the context of some of the videos I see.
I've got a serious case of fish-care anxiety and this video only goes to reinforce that. Couldn't see myself wanting to get a fish of that size onto the bank.

Its tail is on top of the raised end of the mat at the beginning because the mat is too small. Then it drops and its tail goes almost beneath it and the kick is restricted by the raised end. I don't believe its tail would've managed to get underneath the fish and be restricted like that on a flat mat. In reality you haven't got control over a fish that big and shouldn't be holding it up over solid ground more than a few inches anyway, let alone in fits of laughter. But I maintain it's not really the guys fault, more the marketing of unsafe products. Except it appears it was against the rules and if he is linked to a company it might cost somebody a few Bob

I get your point and I agree to an extent. The “fits of laughter” comment though... he's only delighted with his capture which is what it's all about. He looks like he's about to cry when it happens.
I do agree it's not his fault - I mean, no more blame than you'd put on anyone for catching the thing. I note the fishery haven't made a statement yet.
