Some decent advice, but I do think a lot of the replies may be missing your ask.

Small lakes = distance casting and diameter are much less of an issue.
Weedy lake means as long as it sinks like a brick - diameter isn't gonna spook them.

I spoke with the guys at the TB and they recommended the gardener GT (I think that's what it's called). It's not my normal line but for it's purpose it's perfect, plus if your car ever gets stuck you can use the stuff as a tow rope.

I also used braid for a while but when using this I always include a short leader to give me slight room for error. It does a job but I find this way of fishing in weed a bit industrial and you start hooking fish, boating out pull em up and net em- not really enjoyable IMO.

I'm not wrong about twist I'm afraid you are wrong .

You said...Berkley line had been incorrectly spooled onto the brand spools ... are you serious 😂😂😂

I used Ultima almost exclusively for years around 2009 to 2015 when my line of choice from Ultima was discontinued , I used 2 or 3 other types from Ultima and had zero problems with twist .
I've used Berkley big game in 20lb in France for years along with my braided spools and never once had twist problems with it , I've also used Berkley CM90 for years until recently and once again I've never had a whiff of twist .
You must be doing something wrong when loading your spools up or have unmaintained reel rollers .
Your quote from Keith Arthur ( taken from the Henry Gilbert site ) is around 7 years old and is about fishing for mullet
Do yourself a favour and post content from real carp anglers as this is a carp forum not a mullet forum

Carpediem,
Stop talking twaddle, you really don't know me well enough. You are rude and ignorant, and just out to cause trouble.
Fishing is fishing, whether carp fishing, specimen fishing for bream, mullet, bass or tench.

I make sure I DON'T suffer with line twist, I load my spools correctly, whether I'm carp fishing, or chub or pike hunting, or maybe that is beyond you as I am a carp angler amongst other fish interests.

I quoted Ultima as a problem, I definitely had problems with it, and it wasn't down to unmaintained reel rollers, as it was the only line I had problems with on those reels, (Shimano Aero GTE 4000 Baitrunners), Daiwa Sensor brown, no problems, Sylcast, no problems.

Yes I was serious Berkley Big Game had been incorrectly loaded onto the spools, and was a known problem discussed on forums back in 2012, and had happened previously around 1994.

I'm taking twaddle ? Do me a favour you're full of it !
I am not a rude person I'm rude back to people who are rude to me though , I stand up for the newcomers and less experienced that are being mislead with you're information thiat is not relevant
If you understood lines and their different properties for different situations / branches of our sport then you wouldn't be posting this pathetic drivel .
I'm a seasoned angler and fish for lots of different species so know the large difference's of lines and braids very well , unlike you who simply is still living in the old days of pound bs.
Diameter is king I'm afraid wether you like it not and is a very important part of our branch of the sport , not the lb rating I'm afraid .
You mention mullet fishing with 6lb line , please enlighten me where that with be useful on a carpforum ?
Once again this is a carp forum , there are sections in the forum for other species , why not post you're crap in there

You are talking twaddle, because YOU are rude from the start, not me. You are the one who starts having a go, not me. Oh, and by the way, you need to learn to understand English as well; your, you're I know which one to use.

I said fishing is fishing.

I try to explain things, now Keith Arthur's comment included carp fishing lines, it doesn't matter whether it was about a comment about a line used for mullet

The important part of the comment is about a line carp anglers use

We want to be mugged by line makers, because when the EFTTA labelling code of practice was introduced it destroyed the sales of 'honest' lines. 12lb Berkley Big Game became 18.6lb here and nobody wanted line that heavy...but when it had 12lb on the label it sold in shedfulls

Just because a line rated at 15lb breaks at 25lb, has a diameter of 0.40mm, it is NOT ACTUALLY A 15lb line, it is a 20lb line. Because it is a 20lb line, it WILL APPEAR to have a better abrasion resistance.
I do know about lines, I know what I want from a line, and I said many more expensive lines are not as good as budget lines.

I agree diameter is important, but that diameter HAS TO BE RELEVANT to the breaking strain as well.

Wow how rude having a pop at my English now are you ? Get a life

I'm not bothered about Henry Gilbert's posts or whatever his name is , or what's written in them , the guy is a clown, I'd rather watch paint dry than watch one of his shows or read the nonsense he writes , it's bloody painful .

You obviously have blinkers on about how lines of 15lb and 20lb etc and how they should be such a diameter , you're wrong and nobody is getting done over by this it's just your old fashioned approach that is not really relevant any more .

Copied from the Tackle Box website ( FOR CARP ANGLERS ) ....

For weed and snag free situations...
We recommend lines of between 0.33mm and 0.35mm. These will usually break between 16lb and 18lb.
For waters with snags
and heavy weed...
Thicker lines of between 0.35mm and 0.40mm will have better abrasion resistance and be stronger, usually breaking between 20lb and 22lb.
For distance casting...
Lower diameter lines of 0.25mm to 0.30mm generally enable longer casts and will usually break between 10lb and 15lb.

Not once was a rating given for poundage given , it is the DIAMETER that is most important

I always go off diameter. Far more important than the breaking strain.

I wasn't rude, I pointed out your English was incorrect. I leave rudeness to you, its habit, you don't know how to be civil.

I wasn't worried about Henry Gilbeys blog, I quoted the important part, which your short-sightedness keeps missing, so especially for you, I will quote it again:

I try to explain things, now Keith Arthur's comment included carp fishing lines, it doesn't matter whether it was about a comment about a line used for mullet

The important part of the comment is about a line carp anglers use

We want to be mugged by line makers, because when the EFTTA labelling code of practice was introduced it destroyed the sales of 'honest' lines. 12lb Berkley Big Game became 18.6lb here and nobody wanted line that heavy...but when it had 12lb on the label it sold in shedfulls

There are other tests that Tackle Box miss, they don't do the abrasion resistance, so your quote from them actually misses a number of points.
For example, one fibre may have a higher breaking strength because it is larger in diameter, but that does not mean the fibre is stronger. It may merely be thicker in diameter. Using denier ratings, fibres can be tested and compared regardless of their diameter, for a true comparison.

Based on denier ratings, some of the lines currently being sold are much larger than the label on the spool. In some cases, an angler thinking he is buying 12lb line is actually buying 22lb line with a 12lb label on it.
So we have to go back to this bit about overrated breaking strains, because lines in the UK are not sold within EFTTA regulations, as any breaking strain can be stuck on any line, of any diameter. The rest of Europe and Japan have much stricter laws on breaking strain vs diameter.
Working in a tackle shop, as I've said in the past, I was never asked for a line by diameter, only by breaking strain.

All this because I said I use Gardner Pro lines in 15lb, which are copolymers, have a good abrasion resistance , and also sink, both properties of which, better than that of monofilament, and are what I use in weedy waters.
For the record, the lake I fish is very weedy, and I've not lost a fish yet on the Gardner Pro 15lb.

Not saying anyone is right or wrong but quoting from Keith Arthur / Henry Gilbey and referencing 6lb line for mullet fishing you are definitely asking for a bite from someone

😂 there seams to a few of them on here!
I'm stick my 2 pence in now, I agreed diameter plays a bigger part these days as it's tells you what you really want to know.
However as I said before some people can't spool up properly an some do not look after the line/braid on there reels....

Diameter also plays a big part in abrasion resistance, a small nick in say 0.35mm line will reduce far more of the remaining lines linear strength than the same nick in say a .40mm dia line
Are you sure?

This action cannot be undone.
