I'm afraid that's a matter of opinion , for me the early 80s to mid 90s were the time to be on the bank , places have changed around the North west certainly for me and a lot a fellow carpers up here

The thing is, social media does have an effect on angling around you. You can never step foot on social media and still have its influences impacting your angling. My local pond come renewal time was littered with kids armed with 6ft dwarfs (biggest oxymoron ever) and a staffy. I counted 8 of them the first weekend on a pond barely an acre in size. The local mumsnet tribe has been moaning about the increase in birds getting catapulted at or dogs chasing the geese into the pond.
Mumsnet are also talking about this gang all dressed the in the same green tracksuits, laying about the pond wearing polaroids, muttering **** about "barrel bomb business" and getting "half a wrap", so they're getting nervous about a potential crime epidemic.
Anyway, Had a walk around it yesterday and normal service has resumed. Completely empty apart from an old boy using float big enough to trot a whole Mackerel for Tuna in the Ocean. Much less of an eyesore

Hell yee. We can't deny the enormous impact of social media, especially nowadays. Everybody is online; everybody wants to become famous; everybody wants to feel part of a community. I believe in the power of communities. I have one on my Instagram account. There I share beautiful pictures with my fish. Now, I have almost 20k followers. I thought one year ago that it would be a great idea to buy instagram followers. Why not? Everybody is doing that. I hope in the future to make money on it.

Apart from one young un 😡no one posts fish on social media on the lake I fish. !! We appreciate the solitude to much. Not small fish either..... of all different species. The bream anglers are worse than the carp boys.

I never experienced fishing the "glorious" 70s or 80s. But it always sounds awful to me. Very clicky, people going out their way to not help other people out. I've never liked the sound of the eliteism in groups such as the BCSG.
We read stories written by people who were within the click, so of course they make it sound great, but id imagine as an outsider or a keen youngser was far worse than it is today.
Theres a difference between trying to protect your sport and just being an arse.

I would disagree with that I was lucky enough to get into the BCSG about 20 years ago and I have met some amazing people and anglers. I don't think it has ever been elitist . It's just most experienced anglers can't be bothered to fill the form out or join and have the interview. It also produces the best magazine in carp fishing and any member can put pen to paper.
I also met some great anglers on the bank in the 80s that were only to happy to help a youngster starting out.

I think a problem with social media these days is far to many anglers are overexposing themselves.... Nothing turns me off/become indifferent to (talking Insta here) Someone who is constantly putting up shots of all and sundry every other day.... Mainly sponsored types ,which i get, but i just scroll over them asap or delete altogether ...Not knocking these blokes and using as an example Jules Cundiff has over five and half Thousand pics up (had to delete sorry J if your reading this.),Dave Levy was up every moment,Shelly is forever putting up Scaley F'ers from the Woolpack,now Bartroop is on there i'm sure all of his shots of same fish will follow suit.(Bit jealous tbh..!!) but you get my drift...Less is Most defiantly more....At least Oli Davis has a nice scenic every now and again.... The whole pic thing has become very stale imho and i'm drifting away from/no longer motivated by carping altogether after countless years....

There were plenty of goodens about, just had to find them , one bloke gave me some black majic paste every Saturday down south weald and told me where to stick it, lol, under a bush , enyway after a month of trying I had a 4 lb common, some were total c**** but that's cricket lol.

Have to agree, I unfollowed pretty much everyone who solely posts capture shots.
When I catch a nice fish and want a photo it's exciting... constantly looking at what someone else has caught... not so much...
I quite like Dave Lane on insta, posts are quite varied...

Also, you can use Instagram not only as your main social account but also for business. I have an online store, and I use Instagram to promote it. When I first joined here years ago the monthly catch report was 10 pages deep, used to like looking how ppl were getting on, now it's the same faces with a 2 pages max. Tbh I stopped posting my pics as didn't see the point anymore

I am only on Facebook as far too old for the others, and what stuns me is the names with doubles and twenties with accurate weights and preaching fish care, the best fish care is unhooking in the water and releasing, not dragging every poor 13lber up on the bank. I am not disrespecting any size but does it really matter? I get fish from tricky venues, lookers but the names with 15.04 common, one of 14 today is in my opinion ridiculous. Give me a shot of the lake, tell me you had a few, but don't put your woolly hat on and show me some poor little fish in blistering conditions.
Even with friends on a syndicate if I want a photo, I will do it before weighing and they ask why - because it's a nice fish, a good looker and when / if I weigh it on the way back does it actually matter?
If I post a picture I would never include a weight (my syndicate page is different) as much as I like my friends 29.15 or 30.02 what do they care? They see a lovely fish.
