Unfortunately parcels do go missing. But, it's your responsibility to adequately insure them using the right service so you can claim if something does go wrong. I appreciate it's a bit crap if the PO worker offers you the wrong service, but the first thing they should ask is what it is and how much it's worth.
What I will say as an ex-postie of 22 years, is double check the exact address it's going to. Write the postcode properly (after the house number, the postcode is the most important part). And make sure the address and postcode are clearly and easily readable. Most ‘missing' parcels end of missing for that reason.

Yes it is my responsibility but the conditions around it are shady. A cheque issued a day after the claim submitted, and on a Saturday. The Post Office have completely chinned this off and not looked. I'll be honest and say I truly believe it has been stolen internally. I'm not expecting to get any joy but I'm a stubborn arse. 1 thing is for sure, I will never send a parcel with them again

"There's a person with the name. COVID 19"
That's what we have to put when we're signing for the parcel on your behalf, as we have been doing since the pandemic thing started.

The circumstances dont look good and there is a chance it was stolen internally, without going into too much detail i was told several years ago that this does happen and if i was to send anything valuable to send it special delivery as they are then kept seperate and looked after better.
I will just add the vast majority of royal mail staff are genuine honest people and its not just royal mail where parcels go missing.

I know that and this is the first and last time I've ever had anything go missing. The fact that the price jump from £17 to £27 and me commenting to the post master that this was a rip off is what is so shady. I almost walked back in and asked for my parcel back such was the feeling I got, I so wish I'd followed my instinct. I actually hope that it has genuinely just gone missing and that nobody is to blame but everything screams that this is not the case. It is now sat with the Postal Review Panel which is their 3rd tier of customer complaints as I'm not happy with their responses so far.

The person dealing with the claim won't have any clue if it was stolen or not though, totally different departments. And if anyone did know it was stolen, whoever did it would be in big trouble. It doesn't happen very often (like I said, I know from experience that almost all ‘lost' parcels are misaddressed or misdelivered) but in my 20+ years at RM I saw two people caught for theft. Both were prosecuted and locked up for 18 months.
Again though, that's very uncommon, is very very rarely the cause of a ‘lost' item and anyone with ‘inside info' to the contrary is speaking out of their ar5ehole.

Did you ever visit any of the RM main hubs,it goes on alot more than you think. It is so easy delete and reprint labels and have them delivered elsewhere, the original parcel just suddenly vanishes

It was not misaddressed as I always take photos so that I can send them to the buyer along with proof of posting. It was also packaged properly so it will not have come apart. This is all on Royal Mail. My mistake was using them.

Many many years ago I worked for TNT in a warehouse and they had a large parcel that night that had to be delivered to Iraq when the war was on ...... it went missing and they never did find it

But it's not all on Royal Mail though is it. You said in your OP you "made a mistake".
You were offered a tracked service, (Special Delivery) that you didn't take. If you had it automatically covers up to £500 and this thread would never have started.
Rip off or not, if it is over £50 I always send stuff by Special Delivery.

Not putting any blame on you for where it went Glenn, the conversation has just gotten onto RM in general, and even though I don't work for them anymore I know the job inside out. Sometimes stuff does genuinely go missing.. No courier is any different and some are a lot, lot worse.
I've just remembered another main reason for items going ‘missing' - lying customers. Multiple times I had complaints about stuff not being delivered, for the last 7-8 years PDA's have been used that leave a GPS trace where the item is scanned. Every single time the item was scanned at the customers house, one person tried claiming a parcel hadn't arrived when there were 2 of us delivering to opposite houses so I actually saw the other Postie give it to the customer. A day later they claimed they hadn't received it
It doesn't happen quite as much now, as nearly all parcels are scanned, but stuff sent without tracking or a signature used to be looked on as a free item by unscrupulous eBay buyers, and without proof of delivery PayPal will refund 100% of the time.
The bottom line is, fully cover yourself for the value of any item sent. Special Delivery is expensive but fantastic for valuable items, and is still the way I choose over any other courier. Tracked is a good option as it's scanned at every stage, just ensure the right insurance is selected. Signed for is really only for items that you want to confirm have arrived - it's not good enough for anything expensive.

Yes mate. I wanted it Tracked not signed for but was only offered 1 option. My own fault for rushing on a Saturday evening to get it posted before they shut. An expensive lesson has been learned but I will never use them again.
