I view rods very much as I do cars!
If you want something to get you from A to B rod wise, then the cheap choice is broad.
If you need something specialist like a 4x4 then you have a more limited selection and probably an increased price.
But the real joy for me are custom rods, rods that are actually a bit too expensive and do little more than a cheap set - but they are mine, a real emotional attachment and ones I can gaze at all day and remember what, why, when and all the memories they hold.
Aside from range fishing, expensive rods have fewer advantages - but playing actions and confidence in them are for me greater.
If you can afford to go for a more expensive custom type build I would - yeah they are just a rod, but by Christ we spend enough time looking at the poxy things they may as well be a think of beauty..
I have some sportex 2.75 (pretty sure they were built by guy below) - some Chris Orme Torrix 10fts and some BandW Merlins - that I would never sell not because in today market they would be worth next to nothing - but because they are thing of beauty.

The priciest rods are the ones you don’t use. 
Personally I prefer custom built Harrison rods. UK made blank and UK built rod.
If you have them built exactly how you want them then you’ll use them a lot. Therefore “price per use” makes them a lot cheaper than a set you buy but never use.

I always think as it’s my main hobby if I can afford it I like to have my rods custom made and then I just keep using them and never think about changing them.
So works out cheaper in the end as long as I look after them which I do.
Mind you look at other hobbies racing bikes costing £13,000 and they will change them every few years while my rods will probably never be changed as I am 100% happy with them.

That’ll be Steve White. When I moved into Edenbridge, I think he lived in the same road as me, but not sure if he still does?
