Because most people go by either the diameter or BS of the line it does read well.
Think that's called good marketing

yeah always best to buy by diameter for sure.
classic case is 15lb GR60. a 0.40 line is 24lb all day long, hence it being so "tough" - it just had more meat than other more accurately rated lines
