If you want complete flexibility for the future, and only 1 set of rods, the only option is 12 or 13' casting distance wise, even lessons wont change that. They can do everything a 10' can, the 10' can't do what they do distance wise.

That's only a matter if it's casting only lake

For many it might be as swearing in church but my baitboat goes everywhere I go...

Most are casting only lakes in the UK. Most aren't big enough to need a boat

Edit I'd rather use a bait boat myself too nowadays but on a lot of places you can't, hence total flexibility of 12-13.

Trouble is there's more lakes that won't allow them I been thinking of a bait boat but none of my clubs allow them

At the end is a no brainer. 10ft rods can't offer the casting capabilities as a 12ft rod.
So, go for 12 ft

just wrapping up my first year of using 10ft rods (3.5's) compared to 12's (3.25)

main differences I have found is that the 10's are a lot easier to land fish with, don't get caught up on foliage as often, are lighter & easier to get in & out the car.

12's do cast further, have better pickup at range & provide a bit more backbone in heavy weed but that's it.

overall I much prefer the 10's

What are 10ft 3.5 t/c rods like to play carp on. Are they stiff as pokers?
