I think I will get a shimano spod reel of some kind, leave the baitrunner in his cupboard, hopefully for a fair few years yet

Was just reading a post about the bail arm flicking over, user error though, think I'm going to go with this reel, can't bring myself to buying a daiwa, massive shimano fanboy here.

I would recommend getting an Ultegra XTD over the Aerlex. Yes, the Aerlex bail arm closing automatically on you is user error, but it will happen and you will crack off. You don't need a hair trigger bail arm on a spod reel! The money saved on a lost spomb soon adds up to the better reel.

I have seen the video online on how to rectify it by removing a simple pin, other than that there can't be that much difference can there?

I was going to say I also hated the bait runner spool, pointless on a spod reel. Turns out I'm talking about the old XTA version and apologies, I know nowt about the new one.

The issue of the bail arm was on the earlier aerlex 7000 xta. The rotor has to be in just a certain position for the bail arm to open correctly. If some have had issue with the bale arm closing on them it's only because they haven't had it in the right position for it to click open fully.
Once you know the position it's then easy enough to use.
The 7000 is a fair bit heavier than the 10,000 too. About 2 ounces!
You will have no issues with the 10k model.
The 7000 has a baitrunner 2 spool, so handy for a marker rod. It has a nice folding handle.
The 10,000 has a normal quick drag cap. It has a floppy folding handle.
And if you want to modify your reel to make it a fully manual bale arm...

I would also look at the Ultergra too, little bit more but a cracking reel.
To be fair depending on how regular you spomb the big bait runner will be fine, bullet proof reels those old ones
My mate bought a set when they first came out, WTF, looked massive at the time, especially at the side of some 6000's lol but stood the rest of time, cranking machine!
