I think the best of them got caught over the years and dont think there was anything bigger than what was known about.
What about the beached 58 that was netted by Walker? I don't believe that fish was ever landed on rod/line and I don't think it was one of the known big fish spawned up?

But does the origin of the stock really matter? Isn't it more important to be able to give anglers a taste of what fishing there back in the day was like.

You mean the fish in the 1950's written about in letters years later in the 70's, a female fish that was beached during the spawning period that he said looked distressed and wouldn't make it back off the shallows so netted it carried it up to the dam end and released it but not before weighing it at 58lb or was that estimated or guesstimated, kit wasn't that good in the 50's they were taking them into Ross to weigh on the green grocers scales, also by his own admission in the same letters fish that he looked at in the water that he estimated could of been 50 or 60lb were later compared with his capture of Clarrisa at 44lb when he went on to catch it he said it could of been one of the fish he was watching a few seasons earlier same as the Eddie Price letters some 20 years after his sightings all hearsay I reckon half of them had some opiates in the pipe unfortunately time passes and stories become elaborated we will never know, what we do know is the biggest caught by rod and line was the Bishop by Yates, I like a story will sit and listen to the old boys I know still fishing from the same periods but they do have to think hard about some of what they're saying.

Yes but my point is that for a lot of guys who aren't fortunate enough to have the kind of tickets we have, their experience of carp fishing is being hemmed in at linear or having a prebooked swim. The chance to experience a bit of actual proper fishing as it's meant to be must be worth the premium price. I look at redmire as a holiday venue these days. For me personally the actual lineage of the stock is of less importance

Most people fished redmire for the history etc but more importantly for the original leney strain of carp.Have heard all the bull its a place where the atmosphere is frightening etc never felt anything there but it is a nice place to be. I first went in close season in 79 and 2 big name anglers were poaching it ,dont blame them i would have too.Tim paisley did an article in carp world in late 90s or 2000s and he said it needed leaving alone for 20years. Its been hammered every day by 4 anglers for years and those that have been know that 4 on it is plenty.
