Surprises me that tapered mainlines aren't more popular. If you want or need to use a shock leader then they pretty much solve all the problems imho.
First and foremost, no knot. Whatever rig and/or hooklength, it has the best chance possible of smoothly pulling off or through.
40lb mono much less tangle prone than braid or lead core(which is no longer needed) and will act as a 10m abrasion resistant rubbing leader in all but the most extreme conditions.
Available in 10,12 and 15lb mainline sections (maybe others)
If you want extreme distance they are not quite up there with braid because of the stretch in mono but you have to be casting a very long way to notice it. Some, but not all tubing will thread.
Far, far easier to use and much less disaster prone than big leads, big casts and braids
Not quite perfect but as near as we have got so far.
In most conditions in terms of fish safety they work best if you don't drop the lead which is another plus.
Been using the Korda Sub line version for the last 2 years or so and happy with it.
Clubs and fisheries should be encouraging their use I think.

The reason they're not popular is as soon as you have any damage to the line and have to cut back you lose the shockleader. I believe they're reversible so it's possible to get 2 ‘uses' out of it but it's not great value for money. They were invented to get round leader bans.

How far are you trying to get to? With a decent cast and 0.37/0.38 line, 150yds is achievable straight through, obviously regularly checking your knots with a fixed lead on a Heli set-up.
I prefer to use 20lb Korda touchdown as it gives me greater confidence, just that it doesn't cast as far as the lower dia lines.

I agree, quite probably they were developed to allow the use of a leader section on waters where leaders attached with knots were banned for fish safety, usually due to ignorant, careless or uncaring use by "anglers". Sounds like a good idea to me.
Also agree that eventually you will use up the shockleader section in use. However I don't find using them expensive because
a. 40lb mono is very tough and durable.
b. Only used when a shock leader is necessary, so not very often.
c. Most fisheries do not chew up 30 or 40 ft of mono with every use, especially high diameter mono.
d Because they are reversible I get 2 lots of use.
e. They are not ridiculously expensive when compared to a spool of good quality mono and a spool of appropriate braid or some tapered leaders.
They last me full years fishing and as I renew all my spools of mono annually as a matter of course, or more often if necessary cost is not an issue. As I said they are not perfect but at the moment they are as good as we have got with regard to fish safety, angler safety and ease of use and reliability.

Sorry should have said. Talking about tapered mainline. Usually about 10-12 m of heavy mono with 250-300m of 8-15lb mainline all in one seamless piece. No knots. I use the Korda product which is Subline. Fox produce one which has a slightly lighter shockleader section.
Both are double ended with shockleader sections. If you lose or use up one end you can reverse the line on the spool and use the other end.
