I have the Nikon D5600 and the inbuilt intervalometer is poor, one thing I noticed when using it is sometimes every shot would be over exposed and next time it would be fine. I did a quick search and it is a problem not sure if it's unique to that model or not but due to that and the start time as opposed to delay I purchased a generic wired version one via Amazon and so far no problems

Think that's what I'll do.
The decent wired versions seem to be around the £30 price point.

I had no problem with a cheapo generic one for my old panasonic, about 12 quid on ebay.
Just bought one for my olympus, for similar money. The olympus in built intervalometer is great, I just wanted the shutter speed parameter for some astrophotography which I don't have on the olympus
An extension lead is handy too, having the buttons by the mat so you don't have to step away from the fish, I use a corded shutter release for this along with the built in intervalometer

Set it to shoot every 2-3 seconds . . .you will have loads of 'duff' shots but only need 2 decent ones (one of each side) and the rest can be deleted . . .make sure your memory card has a decent capacity / speed rating

Not many flashes will keep up with that rate, best to set it 7-10 secs so it doesn't mess up at 2 in the morning when you aren't fully awake

7-10 seconds is a loooong wait unless your catching pasties . . .try that with a 40+ fish. Agree 2-3 sec delay is no good for night shots . . everything else its fine

That's a nice problem to have tho
I do have a workaround for that but I don't think many would spend the money and learn to do it for catch pics alone

I set mine to countdown for 20 seconds from when i press start then take a shot every 5 seconds after until I stop it. Seems to work pretty well for me for both day and night shots. One of the best £15 I've ever spent....

I have one of these cheap ones. Agree, works absolutely fine. Bit of a ball ache to program it but once it's done it holds the settings.
