I had the same issue on my modeo (05) and as it was easier access i opened it up and the egr and pipe were full of carbon.
Cleaned out what i could and used some carb cleaner to zap the rest and also fitted a blanking plate.

You can get egr delete kits but could cause issues at the MOT time.
Not just emissions but the tester spotting it's been done

Well got car back today. Had a brand new egr valve and cooler cost me £800 in the end. In my local garage . It seems to be running better but don't no if that's just me.

Yer the garage gave the unit back. Look-alike you can take it apart. But probably not worth it. It the 2 holes going into it where messy

My mate at work just mapped the fault out of his audi a4 so it can no longer be detected and hes never had a problem since and that was nearly two years ago and he has had no issues with it since. Egr valves are only there for emissions and cars ran perfectly alright before them.

It probably is running better, i had to change the egr in my mk6 2.0tdi golf last year as it was intermittently going into limp mode over a 2 year period, a lad at work is very good with vcds and my faults were showing as the egr not reaching 100% open and and fully closed so we played with some settings giving it bigger tolerance and recalibrated it,
It got away with it for another year then started going into limp mode again recalibrated it but suspected it now wasn't fully closing as getting rough idle and car wasn't running well it lasted couple more months before limp mode again sticking egr, so decicded to change it.
As others have already said depending on model it is a real pain to do when they changed from mk5 golf to mk 6 they moved the egr from the top of the engine to the bottom at the back main dealers were charging in the region of 7 hours labour dropping subframe, drive shafts exhaust cooler etc
I have another mate that was a vw mastertech he said he knows quicker way just removed drive shaft, exhaust, bottom engine mount and pushed engine forward to accesss, 3hrs start to finish i gave him £500 for full job and and vw egr and other parts needed he obviously gets good discount. Your £800 at a garage isn't really high and would be the norm from most garages
I instantly noticed the car running better and fuel economy went back up to what it had been couple of years previous, as stuart says you could have deleted it from ecu which isn't strictly legal and if detected would fail mot but also by doing this you also have to mechanically blank the egr in effect fully closing it.
